mp3 compatibility

Hi all. I am new on x5world, so maybe I'm asking questions already been answered long ago.
Does anybody know which mp3 readers are compatible with the bmw usb interface? I don't like ipod, and so far I checked that it works with sony and thomson and not with creative and trekstor.
Any other info?
thanks
Alex

Welcome to X5World!

If your mp3 player has a usb interface, it is supposed to work, according to BMW. The e70 has a usb plug in the center console storage area and it will read and navigate stored mp3 files via that interface.

it works, indeed, but the interface works as a REAL interface (i.e. with tracks, playlist visible etc in the main screen) only with some mp3 readers. with the others it works as a normal audio device plugged in in the aux plug, which is next to the usb plug in the same storage area, but you cannot manage it from the wheel or with the "joystick"

It depends on how the MP3 player "reports" itself to the USB interface. If that connection is pretty standard and straightforward, it will work.
If your MP3 player requires a special driver to work on Windows for example, chances are 100% that it also does not work on the BMW USB interface. As far as I understood it, this is why some USB harddisks work and some don't. All USB memory keys work and indeed some MP3 players.
(My guess is the ones that work plug & play on Windows), and of course the IPOD, as BMW made sure this one worked as it's so popular.
I guess when this USB thing becomes more popular in all BMW's and people start to get rid of the CD-Changers and loaders, we will hopefully see BMW start supporting more types of connections and publish a list of supported players.
(would love to see them support the Zune..)

This is why we have such a paradox. Consumers want choice, but we also like standards. Vendors that wish to integrate with technologies that don't have standards have to choose what they will support. That's why many of us (me included) caved in to the pressure and just went the iPod route. For whatever your thoughts are on Apple and monopolies, the iPod simply works and I never wasted a minute fooling with mine to get it to work with the X5. Our time is worth something and at this point, I am comfortable with my decision to cave and not waste any more time on this!

So if there is a cable that connects one end into the ipod and one end into the RCA ports, it will work ? I didnt order the IPOD interface adaptor but im assuming the RCA and USB ports come standard on the 4.8 E70, right ?

In order to control the ipod with the iDrive, you must have the 6FL option and iPod adapter (comes with the 6FL option). I've seen others post on this board a y-adapter that they bought from other sources.

If you do not need to control the iPod, you can play the music of any mp3 player through the mini jack located in the center console of the e70.

GREAT. But through the mini jack, will the music sound distorted as if it was connected through a tape adapter, or will the quality be the same as if i was listening to the ipod via headphones ?

It won't be distorted as long as the cable is of good quality.
