E70 / E71 Backup Camera Retrofit Instructions

This is the first document that I've seen from BMW indicating retrofit of certain accessories will pertain to both the X5 (E70) and X6 (E71)

http://www.xoutpost.com/pdf/e70/Rear%...0E70%20E71.pdf

Enjoy!!

It'll be interesting to see if someone will identify what the weakest point is on the backup camera on the E70 and possibly suggest a replacement for that part...

weakest point is lack of lighting!! look at the narrow backup lights on the E70. They produce ZERO light for the camera. My bro mountain a flash light for more light and got 500% better result.

so there are 2 ways to solve the problem.

1. more lighting
2. better camera that's much more sensitive.

One more VERY weak link with the system....

Since the i-drive screen takes so long to boot up, the camera is rarely available when you need it (unless you start the car and sit there for a while before backing out).

Has anyone actually had someone run back there with more lighting (at night) while in reverse to see if the display is a lot more clear? I would want to be absolutely sure it's not just the limitations of the camera before replacing anything.

Update:

There are 2 types of reversing cameras..

The Factory fit retrofit kit, as per the X5 brochure, that utilizes the blank to the right of the number plate lamp. This kit will need calibrating and coding and supplies the coloured graphic overlays on the camera image. Part No 66 21 0 417 969

The Dealer fit kit, where the camera is combined with a replacement tailgate release. This kit does not need coding or calibrating and does not have the graphic overlays. Part No 66 21 0 417 170 plus 66 21 0 417 943
