2008 3.0 X5 oil filter location?

Hi everyone,

My 2008 X5 just got over 4,700 miles and I plan to DIY change oil before a long trip. I've tried to find the oil filter location for this model but have no luck so far. I've also searched this site for information on oil change for 07, 08 X5 and couldn't find any. I've got underneath the car, located the oil drain nut, but still no sign of the oil filter anywhere. Don't know if I have to take off the silver metal cover to get to the oil filter or not? Don't know the oil filter should look like the one on old model or different?

Have any of you changed oil for this model? Please post the information. I really appreciate your helps.

Thanks.

Haven't done a 3.0 E70, but I have recently done many other 6 cylinder models (325, E53, Z4). It will be on top of the engine, near the front, right side when looking at the engine. It is a canister filter, not a spin-on.

Edit: drawings added of the engine, and the filter assembly.
