For your Dealer Installed Sat Radio that they eventually got to work, do you remember if they had to connect to the service computer to "code" the car to recognize the Sat Radio?

Our X5 came with Sirius installed. The delivery guy at Spartenburg had to do something at a computer. He disappeared for a few minutes and came back and said it was ready.
I don't remember if we had to call the BMW Talk to get Sirius or if that was just the next step in the delivery intro. No idea if something has to be internally coded at a dealer if installed after the fact. Porsches do need that done with a PIWIS to have the source changed, but not sure if recognizing the radio is sufficient. If Sirius is a choice on iDrive maybe not. If not on iDrive menu probably do.

Probably what he did was to go on the Sirius site to activate the unit. Since you had your Sat Radio installed at the factory, the car already knew it was there (coded - if required). I don't think I have Sat as a choice on the iDrive menu, but I'll check. On the '02 3.0i I had I added the cellphone, telematic control unit, and voice recognition module and they were recognized and appeared on the menu after I did the install. I have already verified that pre-wiring is there. Just trying to find out in advance if I have to get the dealer involved.

Did you figure this out? I'm deciding if I want to try to install Sirius on my own. I have done it on other cars before, just wondering if I need the dealer to do anything.

The parts department you'd order it from should be able to tell you whether codiing is required or not. Even if it is required, it won't be more than 1hr of labor.

Coding Not Required - Maybe?
I read some of the installation instructions on the Home page of this site for installing the Sirius Sat Radio in the E53 X5, even the BMW provided instructions, and "coding" doesn't seem to be required. Check out the BMW Instructions and see if you come to the same conclusion. Sales guy told me, "some people have told me that they have done the install successfully without coding." Wasn't the authoritative answer I was looking for.

I don't think it is that expensive to activate the Sat radio, as you are not updating the software, just coding the car for the new Sat radio. If the car needs the software to make the Sat radio work, that should be done at no charge. There is a bulletin somewhere that states this. Good luck either way.
