I get 20 mph with my 3.0 E70 and just purchased an 08 with same engine.

Couldn't justify the extra cost for the couple of extra miles per gallon.
(On average 50 cents more per gallon than premium)

Count me in as one of those colonials who fit in the niche. I've been waiting for a long time for the long-overdue X5 diesel to be offered in the states, and since I was patient enough to wait for it, I may wait for the new I-drive too.

I suppose I could chnage my mind if the reviews are lukewarm and the costs don't justify it, but at least I'll have the option.

Well we have had diesels here for a long time I have owned a diesel X5 for 3 and half years. I have driven the petrol and diesel and diesel win hands down on performance. As some of you may know I used to work for a BMW dealer here in the UK and 95% of new car we sold are diesel if someone asked for a petrol it was like why diesel is faster much better on gas. There is a slight extra cost new but then if you are on a lease then the end figure is higher so dont pay for it anyway.

The 335d is awesome and the 635d is great too I had a 320d M sport auto as a company car and I was get nearly 50 to the gallon. I went on a run to the coast ie highway driving and got it up to 60mpg. Belive me wait to get them you wont go back to petrol unless it is a M Car.

1 other bennefit the are so easy to tune up, Tunnit boxes or chip my 3.0d is as quick as a 4.4 with a tunnit box on it and does not effect MPG unless you boot it every where.

Look on the brit side if they come in Jan 08 Will be a late Christmas pressie from BMW :-)

The diesel and the N54(if released) will be the way to with a vehicle like the X5 imo. They have perfect power/tq bands for such a heavy vehicle.

What is so bad with the current iDrive? I have owned my x5 for over a month now and it is very user friendly. I figured it out on the first day. Even my wife likes to use it. Maybe I need to own my x5 longer to see if there are any glitches with it. Any forewarnings?

I don't think iDrive is as bad as people make it out to be.

One of little problems with iDrive as I see it is that it's confusing whether i should press it, or turn it, or move it up or down, left or right. And it's not always clear which window I'm in.

Also when I choose something in the top menu, it doesn't go to the sub-menu as it should, but it goes right to the screen that was last used, so I have to move the controller up once to go to the sub-menu.
And there's no back button.

It's just there are a lot of steps to go thru to do a simple thing, and it's not ultra-fast, so not very friendly to operate while driving.

But you're right, if you are parked and have time to fiddle and play with it, it works no problem, 'cause it's pretty straight forward. I figured out how to do pretty much everything on the first day too.

I don't hate iDrive, I like it. I'm fine with it. It gets things done with that nifty little dial. But there's a room for improvement is all I'm saying.
