3.0L TT Diesel Cutaway and Info

The BMW Zentrum hosted a EuroFest this past weekend.Lot's of neat Euro cars. Some neat BMW's that I'll post up soon.Found this new display inside the Zentrum.Timely given the upcoming launch of the X5 and 3 Series diesels in the US.Gives a little history of BMW and Diesel engines. The 3.0L diesel is a physically large engine.....a big hunk of metal!!!! The plastic tank near the exhaust pipe is the urea injection system that chemically changes the diesel exhaust emissions.BMW calls it AdBlue injection. Both tanks hold approx 6 gallons of urea solution. You should get approx 15,000 miles per urea fillup...covered by BMW Maintenance.BMW has not said... their system is similar to the MB system.... but the Mercedes Benz system gives you some warnings...when the tank gets low.If you don't heed the warnings...the car will shutdown and becomes undriveable. With no urea injection the exhaust emissions become pretty nasty stuff. To see the timeline in the gallery pick X3 Large and you can see the print. Thanks! Good shots, thanks.

The exhaust doesn't become any more nasty than what the EU experiences today with the 335d; they just have more lax emissions standards. The EPA required that the engine not run without urea since they figure that many owners won't give a hoot and would let it run out.

Still struggling to get used to the idea of bovine urine in a saddle tank.

Thanks for posting. At first I was thinking that the radiator looked awfully small, but I assume that is the air intake box for the bi-turbos. Interesting.

The small radiator at the front is actually the intercooler for the turbo's.The hot air from the turbo's ( compressing the air in the turbo's heats up the air) is cooled in this radiator prior to being introduced into the combustion chamber.Cooler air is denser than hot air and makes a bigger bang in the combustion chamber. Thanks!
