I can't believe we don't even have a coolant temperature gauge. First car I've owned that doesn't have one. Craig |

> they drained/refilled it 3 times and determined it was a bad sensor.
I'll bet the service department's are also not enthralled by the lack of a dipstick on the 3.0 So, to better understand BMW's mentality, (a) the customers want a dipstick, (b) the dealers and service departments want a dipstick, but (c) BMW thinks vehicles should be fancy toasters, with a sensor to tell you when the toast is done... oops, I mean when the oil is low. So what happens in a situation where the customers, dealers, and serivce departments want a dipstick? BMW say nope, we know better. No soup, oops again, no dipstick for you! |

Let me first say that I mostly agree with you. Personally, I want a dipstick. However, your statement about customers wanting one, I don't think is very pervasive. I know PLENTY of people who have never checked their own oil. Quite frankly, if you look at the enormous number of BMW's on 3 year leases where owner's (if you can call them that!) just use the car for 3 years and get a new one after, they have zero and I mean ZERO incentive to be bothering with car maintenance that doesn't fall on the dealer's shoulders. In short, my honest opinion is that very few BMW owners really want a dipstick and would rather drive a top of the line $100,000 to the local mall to shop then spend time in their garage doing mods (like most of us).
BTW, have you noticed that the oil filler caps are now attached and hinged. Just another example of BMW over-engineering something IMHO, but what can we do...! |

You would be amazed at the number of people who can't open their own hood, let alone check their oil. While I appreciate a dipstick, those of us who do are very much in the minority. BMW knows full well from their warranty claim reports that most customers don't in fact check their oil, ever. It is not a conspiracy, it is simply a manufacturer catering to their target customer base. Posters here assume that people want to work on their own vehicles. Mostly, they don't.

Right you are. I once spoke to a sales guy at a BMW dealer in Southern California which moves more cars then anywhere else in the USA and he said that greater than 90% of their 'sales' were leases. And I can tell you with great certainty that those 'owners' ain't doing nothin' but puttin' gas in their cars. Period.

I don't assume that at all. but I do assume that customers do not want to receive false warnings that require them to take their vehicles to the dealer, and them wait for an oil change to confirm the level, or have to leave it for a couple of days to have an oi level sensor replaced. Not having a dipstick has an impact on customer satisfaction, even if the customer never opens the hood themselves. consider the situation with a dipstick. Customer brings in the car saying he has an oil level warning. Dealership mechanic goes to the parking lot, opens the hood, checks the dipstick, goes back in. Tells the customer the oil level is correct, we'll order a new oil level sensor, we'll call you when it comes in, and schedule a replacement at your convenience. And, oh, by the way, if you are really concerned, I'll show you how to check the oil with the dipstick. |

You are using too much logic. What about the freakin' check engine light that comes on for a bs fault that potentially impacts nothing. You still have to make an appointment with the dealer, take the car in, get a loaner, pick up the car, etc. All for what might be a 5 min reset.
Almost seems like BMW has engineered stuff to be overly complicated on purpose. |
