I don't believe that is true. The one mentioned above is a diesel, and I can't comment on the diesels, but my two 3 litre six cylinder engines don't have dipsticks.

A friend who has a 3.0 petrol has the same inconspicuous looking dipstick as the one in the pic. I can't imagine that a US/Canadian model would be any different than the ones in South Africa.

You guys!

Got me going to the point of raising my hood and looking,....AGAIN! There is no dipstick on the US models. Period.

If you don't believe me, hop on the plane and come over here, I'll lift my hood for you.

For all you dipsticks out there The 3.0d and the 4.8i have a dipstick. I do not see one on the 3.0si.

See attached diagram. Part number for the dipstick on the 4.8i is:

21 DIPSTICK L=575MM 1 11437546695

Not exactly... I happily lift the hood on my US 4.8i and show you my dipstick!!!

EDIT: if you were referring to 3.0i only then you may be right. I can only vouch for the 4.8i...

He's right. The tech at the dealer wouldn't have drained and refilled my oil several times to check if the sensor was bad, if there were a dipstick. BMW screwed the pooch on this one.
