Oil usage on 2009 X5 Diesel xDrive35d

2 days ago got a notice that oil was at minimum level. Next day I check oil level through IDrive and it comes up with Need to add 1 Quart. Took it to the Dealer (BMW Fremont) and it seemed like the tech didn't think a car with 5,500 miles and 4 months old would need that much oil so he took it back to the shop and confirmed that it did need 1 quart. Cost me $23 for the 1 quart which is a little annoying as the dealer said they would top it off!!! However, my main concern is this normal? Should I expect to add 1 quart between oil changes?

While most rational people would disagree, the auto manufacturers typically say that anything less than a quart every 1,000 miles is "normal."


A quart of oil in 5,500 miles would not be considered excessive by almost any standard, particularly in the first 5,500 miles on an engine while it is "breaking-in."

I had to add 1 liter of oil after 9000km on my 35d.
I think it's not unusual.

I know they're referred to as oil burners, but it's no longer an appropriate nickname imo

even my crappy 3.0 litre nissan patrol diesel doesn't go through oil, let alone my X5 3.0sd - which still says the oil is at maximum level after 28,000km

David, there is a dip stick on your car. Just in case you didn't know...

I have 1300mi on mine. Checked the oil level both on iDrive and with dipstick, and both still near top....No oil burning yet....

I can't see how they can charge 28.00 for one quart of oil...
