Topping oil off is part of BMW Maintenance. I know because I've had it done once or twice in two X5's over the years.

They probably charged him labor too (which is even more ridiculous). It takes less than one minute, so he should've been charged less than 2% of his dealer's hourly rate.

That's what I thought, they must have charged labor. What a joke. And yes, I think my dealer tops off fluids at no charge...

That's in reference to the fuel they use -- diesel oil.

colloquially, in reference to engines that actually burned oil - not diesel

what I was getting at is the technological advancements made in diesel engines in recent years means they're not the dinosaurs they used to be

They charged me $23.00 for a quart which included tax and my 10% off being a BMWCCA member. I paid for the quart of oil at the parts dept and then handed the quart of oil to the tech....so there was no labor charge although I did have to sit there and wait quite awhile for the whole process.

I inquired to the service manager about the top off policy as well as the cost of a quart of oil and here was his reply:

Hello David

The oil is $12.22 a quart. It was improperly priced through the parts department.

Please see the (cc) address above. Its our Parts Manager kathy.

I have talked to her and she is happy to issue a refund as soon as possible.

Here is the information on the oil:

The BMW approved motor oil for the diesel powered 335d and the X5 xDrive35d as announced in Service Information
bulletins B00 04 08 and B00 05 08 is the "low-ash" synthetic Castrol SLX Professional OE SAE 5W-30. This oil is
available through BMW via the dealership with Castrol under part number 07 51 0 037 195 (1 qt. bottle).

Oil top off is not covered under the BMW maintenance plan. I welcome you to contact BMW of North America about

This at 800 831 1117.

Thanks for posting this. Seems like your dealer is standing behind it and rectifying the pricing error.

It would appear that owners who have received free top off oil have benefited from a dealer give-away rather than from the BMWNA maintenance plan. Makes sense if you think about it, as BMW would pay based on a signed work order and VIN, and I suspect that anyone who got their oil topped off in a minute or two at the service reception desk didn't actually get a work order.

I looked at the maintenance plan details on the home page, and it doesn't list top-off oil as being included, only wear items.

Thanks for the info David. Even at $12 a quart, that's high. I will have to check sometime at my local dealer. I planned to do an oil change at 5000 miles. BMW pays for an oil change at 11,000 miles on the diesel. I'm glad they gave you some money back...

Are you sure it is at 11,000 Miles? Under Oil Level in Idrive mine shows oil service on 12/2009, 6000 Miles. I assumed this meant a change at 6,000 miles under BMW Maintenance??

Just confirmed with Dealer Service Manager that the oil change is included under maintenance 1 Year from in service date or at 6,000 miles, whichever occurs first on the Diesel. So looks like you are going to save money if you wait until 6K. Or maybe you'll do a change at 3K now instead?
