NAV-Tool for non-factory nav back up camera

Hi,

Has anyone used a NAV TV interface to hook an aftermarket back up camera to the factory non-navigation LCD in an E70?? The only thing my car did not have; and really want, is a back up camera. This interface is supposed to let a camera (or video source) appear on the screen when in reverse and leave the rest of the screen functionality in tact.

I am stoked this thing exists but a little concerned that it will mess up the i-drive system.

I have seen this setup in other BMWs. A friend of mine has a NAV TV converter with a Kenwood camera in his M3 (non-navi). The way it works is that as soon as you switch to reverse gear, the camera activates and NAV TV takes over the LCD screen and shows the video. Once you change the gear, iDrive display pops up.
The NAV TV converter also provides an *extra* AV input, that you can use to connect a video player or a iPOD to play videos.
I am myself interested in getting one, but I know I would hardly use the extra AV input. So I am looking for a cheaper RGB converter that can feed the LCD with camera's video signal.

Yes I agree with the above post! Unless you plan on plugging in a DVD player, game console etc., there are lots of other less expensive modules available for reverse camera. It basically over-rides your LCD display when you put your car in reverse and then switches back once in drive. It will not mess up your i-drive!

I have thought about replacing my oem camera as the quality sucks, but it is tied in with the PDC and the parking assist which draws lines on the screen to not only guide you, but also shows if you have enough space to back into a spot.

Vehicles with active steering are even more complicated. I have this and the dynamic handling pkg. To do an alignment, the dealer had to recalibrate the not only the active steering but also the camera as it's all tied in together!

Can you suggest any less expensive models? I only need to hook up a camera, nothing else...

It can definitely be done. I have talked to couple of installers in my area and they have several options for the camera. But as far as the video converter is concerned, I have had no luck till now. Everyone seems to be selling the $599 NAV TV converter, which does much more than a rear camera requires.

Any suggestions for a *simple* video converter? Anyone?
