Picked up '09 X35d a week ago...
I really enjoy this diesel. I'm taking it very easy for the prescribed 1250 miles. Any specific limits then? Or just common sense? Are there any important issues/problems/good ideas that a new owner should be aware of? Please let me know. I am in total learning mode. I will say that this is the first time I have ever been excited about going out and running errands. My wife passed away 4 months ago, and I wish she could be here and enjoy this too. Cheers everyone! Mike |

Congrats on your 35d! Sorry about your wife. I just got my 35d last week. Do some searches on Diesel break in. Its similar to what I have read about gasoline engines. Its kind of complicated, but taking it easy for the first 1,000 miles is not what is recommended by many knowledgable people. "drive it like you stole it" is not recommended either. Read the hits and you will see a common method to make the rings seat properly and make the engine bed in without scoring etc.
Lots of little things this car can do that are hidden in the manual. You gotta read it to get most of it. Its not intuitive. If you have a dog, hitting the lock button on the key twice will deactivate the interior alarm sensor. Pushing the sunroof switch twice in succession will roll back both the sun shade and the sun roof with one action.... If you figure out how to get fuel into the car at a reasonable rate let me know! (see my post below) Enjoy! |

Sad to hear about the Mrs., but happy to hear that you're liking the new rig. My new X35d has been on order for 4 weeks and is due to arrive in another 3. Sounds like it's the best of all worlds.

Congrats!
Do not take it easy during break-in, it's counter-productive. Stay off the highway as well during break-in. |

Greetings from Canada Mike! Very sorry to hear about your wife.
We just picked up our 2009 X5 35d and we LOVE IT!! To break in, I have been driving 'normally' - no full acceleration starts and no harsh stops. I come from the Audi brand, and while I love the X, a few things irritate me. For example, no default radio volume setting - if you leave it on loud, it stays loud at next start up. Also, when you turn off the X, the doors don't unlock automatically. Overall though, it is FANTASTIC and we really like it. Can't wait to take it on a road trip to Seattle! All the best. |

Hi, You can set the doors so they don't lock when driving via idrive if that works for you.

Hi Moon, that is what i have done, not ideal, but okay this way. I like the auto lock feature, but not having to pull handle twice to get out when I shut the X off. I will get used to it though!

IIRC my SA told me that by default there is a difference in whether you pull the driver's door handle twice or whether you hit the central locking/unlocking button to unlock the doors. The former only unlocks the driver's door and leaves the other doors including the rear hatch locked. The later unlocks ALL the doors. FWIW I know that is how our E53 worked. On the E70s this behavior is adjustable and is remembered by the individual key. So your wife could have the 'safer' setting (only unlock the driver's door) and you could have the all doors unlock setting. Funf Dreisig |

Actually, I find both of those to be features, not flaws. |
