Mine just came on for the first time yesterday evening. Went to the dealer first thing, and they told me it was a fuel vent valve? Out of warranty, but he said he "could do"' something. Part will be installed in the next few days when he gets the part.
It was on from 4pm yesterday, all the way till about 4pm today, with multiple turn on's/off's and no fill ups since Monday (gas cap ok.)

OK, now it's serious!
OK. Our 'check engine light' (AKA Exhaust-gas values light) came on this AM. So this has now officially gone from a minor problem annoying others, to a BFD demanding immediate attention - NOW!
![]() Seriously, we have over 4,500mi on our 2009 35d built in early August. This is the first problem we have had with it. So this is just a bit better than our previous 2001 X5 experience, where we got to drive so many loaners that we knew more about current BMWs than all car mag test drivers put together ![]() I absolutely dread taking it in to the dealer. The 100 mi round trip is bad enough. But once it is there, I don't trust the dealer's mechanics to diagnose/fix ANY problem when their computer doesn't explicitly tell them what they should replace. So I'm now in the market for a good OBD II reader that preferably will allow me to reset the fault codes (in a later life after warranty). Any suggestions? Funf Dreisig p.s. Our late US 2009 35d shows the "Engine" symbol not the "Service Engine Soon" symbol as described in the 2009 X5 owner's manual. |

there's a check control messages option close to where you can check all your systems are ok... it basically stores any messages that had popped up (in case you missed it or want to see it again)... perhaps it says something more specific there...

Dealer just called. It didn't need reprogramming. The DMTL pump valve needed to be replaced.

[QUOTE=cmyX6go;689139]How are you out of warranty already?
75,000 miles, out of warranty...and I only upgraded the maintenance warranty, not the full package. On another note, the light went out yesterday and has not returned. I wonder just how imperative it is that I get that part replaced.

The DMTL (Diagnostic Module - Tank Leakage) pump valve is probably the valve in the system that pressurizes the fuel tank to check for leaks. Did the dealer tell you any more details? BTW there is a fascinating read in the 3series forum on bimmerfest of how complicated this system can be and why it may not be easy to get the light to go away even if it is not really a problem anymore. See post #4 Funf Dreisig |

Same thing happened to me last month with my 3.5d. Engine light came on, stayed on for a few days, then went off, and then went on again. Turns out it was a defective air temp sensor, which needed to be shipped from Germany. Took about 2 weeks to replace, as the first sensor they got was broken in transit. Got a 535ix as a loaner, which made things a bit more bearable.
