Was walking through Boston a few months ago and saw some cars equipped with what looked like Massive Strap On Pillow-Like Devices that covered the front/rear and sides of cars parked along the road to avoid the "bump and park" that's normal in your city and here in San Francisco.

Seemed like a great idea. I've been avoiding 99% of parking spaces and walking great lengths to avoid any type of issue, but I know it's just a matter of time.

The dents you have (at least the one in the first picture) can be pulled out using a paintless dent repair approach, in my opinion. The new tools those guys have work wonders.

I know it's just a matter of time, probably days, before I walk out and see the same damage on my car. I'm literally driving a "city" car to appointments that I specifically purchased the BMW to drive to, just to avoid these issues.

Sorry for the damage, but see what a REPUTABLE paintless repair shop can do for you.

It should be no more than $200 to $300, so you shouldn't claim it on your insurance if you can avoid it.

Good luck!

Just looked at 2nd picture. That will need to be painted. There's a tiny chance it can be buffed. If I were attempting the repair, I might try blending the surrounding paint with new paint, via a buffer (which melts the surrounding paint to blend the repair).

Again, a REPUTABLE shop, will be able to fix it very well. Look up exotic repair shops in your area, and take it there. That's where I always go. They have the best guys/gals and they don't fool around. I've found they're usually the cheapest also, due to their honesty.

That's very odd looking damage, looks like it was hit by a pedi-cab or maybe one of the hot-dog carts going to/from its corner. What could make those dents and scrape the FL fender like that?

The fender looks like it is going to need to be removed and painted. Good luck with the door.

I recall an article in the New York Times, about medical ethics.

The issue was a Jehovas Witness seriously injured in an accident got a transfusion by accident...to no avail, he went on and died. The ethical question was "do we tell the family?"

The 'Ethicist' (this is a staffer on the Times) said- in discussing one's obligations to disclose to the family- "this isn't like a minor fender bender where you don't leave a note..."

To this day, that comment- and that way of thinking about cars by many 'city dwellers' just drives me nuts.

My driving into cities- and more the the point, which car I will drive into the city- is dictated by the probably parking situation.

Finally, why should the OP bother repairing the damage? A week after return from the body shop some other ethically (and otherwise) challenged driver will repeat the same drill.

get a paintless dent remover and put some touchup on the door. i think it'll be barely noticeable after that

I bought a bumper bully so I can drive to (and more importantly park in) the city... yet I still feel inclined to drive my beater there... just isn't as safe as it's a '95 with poor crash ratings and no airbags... not good for 2 toddlers.

That's terrible. I'm in NYC and totally understood your frustration. People just don't care, especially the ones who drive around with the crappy cars.

I agree. NYC is a great place to live, but not for your car. If my wife and I have any "stuff" to do in any of the 5 boroughs, we use our Toyota Corolla. Easy to park, easy to zip in tight spaces and very low maintenance. The X5 will just stay home.

I remember back in 2001 when I bought my new Nissan Pathfinder, in less than 3 weeks I got a bumper scuff.

chicago is no better... but i just learn to accept its only a car and it'll get damaged over time... in a few years you're gonna want a new car so is it really such a bad thing that the car wears a little bit over time? thats the lie i tell myself so that i'm comfortable with driving in the city.. lol
