For those who lease, I would think it should be the same--that is, you should buy before your lease is up. If it's a special order car, I would give a minimum of 3-4 months. Yeah, you'll have the potential of having both cars overlap where you may already have the new car and still have a month or two on the lease. But, that's better than the OP's potential situation where the lease is up and he doesn't have a car yet. By the way, didn't the 2011 go into production in March? |

darwin 316 if that is correct, I just do not understand BMW. My car was a week 15 build, and is done except for the seat module that they are waiting on. Why would they put a seat module in a vehicle built after all of the week 15, 16 builds? If BMW did, that makes no sense, is plain STUPID. Do they not have any loyalty to the buyers who plucked down money and ordered their cars first?

I actually had two x5s ordered and configured through the dealer. The first was a 35i sports activity with m-sport package and a week 16 build. My wife found out that it would come with silver roof rails and she wanted a blacked out car so we switched the order to a 35i sports activity without the M package. The first one with the M package is delayed, while the second one, produced a week later, is arriving first. I guess it worked out for us! I was told a week 17 build, but it went from status 112 to 150 last week. This week is week 17.

This is the downside to just-in-time manufacturing. You would think, however, that BMW would have at least two suppliers for most parts, so that the other could ramp if one supplier went bankrupt, had a factory outage/fire etc. Of course, the more parts order you give one supplier, the better the per unit price, but you have to balance that with reliability if supply.
I assure you BMW is not happy about this. They are spending the money manufacuring cars they cannot sell and losing millions of dollars in delayed sales while they wait for the necessary part. |
