UPDATED 7/23/2010....Shhhh....listen carefully....Mod work being done...

UPDATED 7/23/2010.

Lesson learned.

First off, I must thank providenceleaf for his work with the mod that he did on his X5. The Magnaflow 11235 worked great.
Second, I must thank Gary @ Mieneke in Mahwah, NJ on Route 17 and Billy (his welder) for great work. Billy has over 25 years experience in custom modding with welding. Great price's and mention my name (Baron) and they will take care of you.

Now, on to what I learned. As the first post below shows, the natural sound of the 4.8i is good. Not great, but good for most. I wanted a deeper tone. NU-BE ole' me decided to remove the resonator as seen below in the second video. It had a louder sound, not deeper, plus at 3,200 rpm the waffle effect was annoying.

What to do...a lot of research like before, but this time do it right. Without spending the 2.5K on Eisenmann or Meisterschaft or even 1.4K on Remus, I chose the Magnaflow route like providenceleaf. I listened over and over and over to his YouTube clips. Satisfied with his sound as close to the expensive units, I tried to find the Magnaflow 11235 muffler's. No shops directly around me had them in stock, and the instant gratification in me just had to them immediately. Buying locally was important just in case I decided not to do the job. I found one at Pepboys in Piscataway, NJ and another one in Bridgewater, NJ. With the two in hand, time to make the appointment. Appt. made, and decided to do the muffler job first, leaving the resonator's off and see what it sounded like. Took it for a ride and the sound was insanely deep and loud! But, the waffle effect still eek'd out a little. So, back to the shop to put the resonators back on. The sound is pure orgasmic without the intercourse. Loud & DEEP (NOT raspy, no waffle) when on the gas, quite-like stock at idle or low RPM's and, I repeat, and NO drone. The video's below do the X no justice. You must hear it person (wink wink...Tri-State's Fall Edition coming up...)

I also had the tips (stock 4.8i) move in a little to be more flush with the bumper. No all the way in, but better than stock. Also, the Magnaflows are thinner than the stock muffler so you wont see any muffler's underneath while traveling behind me (but you will hear me.)

Enjoy

2009 brought many changes to my vehicle...refinished wheels, aero kit, running boards....

2010 will bring many changes as well. To start, I was going to have an X-pipe installed today, but changed my mind to only a resonator delete. Sounds good, but a bit raspy. I can live with it, that is, until another inexpensive alternative comes along (shy of spending 2K on eisenmann or miester...)

More mods to come and be completed in July....including caliper refinishing, final bits of chrome (read: roundels) will be painted to match exterior, some grille work in ferric wheel color....and a surprise only to be revealed at the next meet....although I might get a bit antsy and show you on the forum anyway...

Till then....K/B out. (thanks mD for the nickname...)

Before - BONE STOCK

After - STOCK MUFFLER - NO RESONATOR's

After - DUAL MAGNAFLOW 11235 MUFFLER'S - NO RESONATOR's

After - DUAL MAGNAFLOW 11235 MUFFLER'S - WITH RESONATOR's

could u make a video of your car accelerating? otherwise, its not that bad. The echo in the garage ruins the sound.

will do...In fact, I would like to hear that as well. Once I get her back from the dealer (pulley/bearing on A/C pump is shot - thin metal shavings flying through the engine compartment, very concerned,) it will be done.

I'm not in love with it myself, so i will start to seek alternatives (or additional work such as different muffler and maybe do the x-pipe as well.)

Thanks for posting this up!

I was thinking of doing the exact same thing, but was too chicken!

I was also thinking of having he resonators taken out and putting an x-pipe in there. That helps with the raspy sound.

I was going to make it so that if I didn't like the sound, I could just put the resonators back in. The setup that I was thinking of would be like using a set of off road pipes in where the cats go (on a race car of course ), using band exhaust type clamps.

Please keep us posted and Thanks again for posting this u! I'm looking forward to hearing the driving vid!

Leaving the resonator in while removing the mufflers from the back would have left it smoother and deeper without being too loud... Maybe you could try a magnaflow or flowmaster dual in dual out muffler in the middle where the resonator was? Or a pair of flowmaster hushpowers/hushpower2s in that space would give a deep tone without being overly loud or raspy.

So here's where my newbie shows, in this mod. Really the first modification of my X (shy of anything aesthetically done.) I have been doing pretty extensive research on doing this exhaust mod, only to find on YouTube, Google, this forum, etc. most people if not all have not adjusted the H/X pipe or resonator delete on an E70. They all went with a full blown exhaust upgrade (ie. Meister, etc.) As opposed to the E53 crowd which has done resonator deletes, X pipe, full blown, and everything in between to get the sound they wanted.

Since cost was a factor for me, that was out, and since I do so much mileage in my car for business (read: on the phone,) drone was a big factor in not doing just the muffler (most people said the free'r flowing muffler would have created drone at 2-3K rpm.

Since this was a cheaper alternative ($300) I choose this blindly (a little bit of impulse buy was also at hand here.) I have only driven it for a matter of hours before my car required emergency surgery at the dealership, so I will continue to drive it when I get back to see how bad it is. I keep playing the YouTube clips and each time, its sounding different than what I wanted.

The other issue I have is I'm not a mechanical person by nature, and so I have no real ability of trusting a business who just wants to get paid, as opposed to people who want to help me get the sound I want (along with prior experience would be great too.) Its times like this I wish I had purchased the 4.8is I was looking at before getting this one.... (with all the mod work done over years on them, I would have what I wanted by now.)

Most likely, the resonators will go back on, more money wasted. I'm lost on this one. I wanted the deeper tone, but not the drone...I know, I want the cake and eat it as well...such is life. Suggestions appreciated

The resonators are usually a straight through flow design with perforated inner pipe surrounded by packing, which is what quiets it down, and on the E53 it allows some cross flow since it is one unit for both sides. Replacing it with straight pipes as you know doesn't really deepen it but makes it a bit more aggressive and raspy.

Think of old domestic V8 pickup trucks with exhaust work done... The exhaust is louder and deeper without being raspy right? The mufflers are in the middle where the resonators are on the X5, and the whole back end is just straight pipe. I saw a video on here before where someone with a 4.4i left the resonator and removed the mufflers, just throwing a set of dual tips on each side. That one sounded pretty damn good, but a bit loud. I am personally thinking of putting the flowmaster series 50 dual in dual out in place of the resonator and putting straight pipes with dual tips after that... it is a few steps down the list of things financially...

Found some vids, of E53'3 but you can still get the ideas from them.

Muffler delete with stock resonator and cats:

Magnaflow dual in dual out in place of resonator with mufflers removed:
