Potential 2007-2008 X5 4.8 purchase
I have had my eye on a used X5 4.8 for a while and have a few questions. First off people tell me don't own one without a warranty? With that being said I have been focusing my search on a CPO one at a BMW dealer which seems the direction I will probably go. Right now if I buy a CPO car and finance through BMW I can get 6 yr 100K maintenance which extends the 4yr 50K one that comes when you but the car new. Obviously if I buy a 2007 it will be coming off this within the next year. Also the CPO will warranty the the car for 6 yrs or 100K so this too is great. I can't see buying such a nice used car and be making payments and having to worry about a costly repair or maintenance on the car. Once more thing I noticed is that with the Sport package the car has very aggressive tires that I assume wear our very fast as opposed to the standard ones with some sort of all season package. I have friends with an m5, m3, 335i and they all complain about not only the cost of the tires but how little life they get out of them. I have a 2000 CLK430 convertible and am going on about 5 yrs on my Michelin Pilot Sport A/S and have about 40K miles on them. Anyways would love to get some input on people that own a 2007 or 2008 and how they have liked the car. Also if I buy a private party one within warranty can I extend the maintainable with BMW and if so any idea what it would run? |

From what I have seen, the sport package with the 20's will go 15-20k (maybe a little more or less depending on your driving style). Full set of the cheapest runflat 20's is usually the Bridgestones and I just paid $1200 for 4.

I have a "sport package" and 19" rims....so the sport doesn't mean you will get soft 20" rubber.
A large problem is BMW allows a lot of 'toe in' on their alignment specs...so people are driving around with alignments that BMW says "its fine" yet it is at the outer limits on toe and kills tire wear. I have an M5 with PS2s and they can go fast...but not as fast as the PS2s on the rear of the 996TT!! 10k on that, 18k on the M5...and 23k on the X5 and likely to get 30-32k Buy the right tires, align it right, AND ROTATE FRONT TO REAR! Skip the maintenance plan- it is a sucker play. DO NOT have a dealer service the car (yes warranty, no wmaintennace service) You can add a BMW extended warranty if the original warranty is within 45 months and 45k miles. DO NOT REPLY on the CPO to protect your purchase- have an independent PPI done. |

I did not buy a CPO however, i did buy the extended warranty from Mercury insurance group. There's only a few things not covered by them, which i found out when my pump for the air system failed which runs almost 1200 installed. All it took was a phone call and it was replaced the same day no issues. Tires on the other hand a set of proxe stII will run around $800-950 and i have had them for about 15,000 miles with little or no sign of wear, like the op said all goes down to driving style. I would say i have never regretted my purchase and i fortunate to have had no major issues

So going the CPO route is not what I should be set on? I would be OK to buy a warranty outside of BMW and not be so focused on extending the service warranty? What type of things would come up for those additional 2 years after the 4 expires?

IMO extended warranty companies are a pain to deal with--they eventually will start to make it harder to ok repairs. Go with a CPO. I went CPO and also got the extended maintenance for $2K (the brakes alone will be that much) + I got the tire warranty for $1K (I've had mine for 3 months and have already replaced 3 tires that had nails in them). My $.02.

Suggest you get a CPO, as a BMW warranty is easier to deal with than an aftermarket warranty. What you can't do is assume that because it is CPO, everything is perfect. You still need to do your own pre-purchase inspection, and due dilligence, before making a purchase decision. Some purchasers decide that they don't need to do that because it is CPO, and they end up paying for that decision.
I wouldn't get the maintenance plan, unless you are set on using your dealer for all maintenance work, and want to include the price of that in your financing. You will likely require brakes and regular services, not much more. You don't have to use the dealer for maintenance, but if you decide you want to, you can still always do so. Why pay for the maintenance in advance? And if you don't use the dealer, you can find it at a lower cost.

You can buy a BMW warranty and not HAVE TO buy a cpo car from a BMW dealer. BMW sells the "Gold" plan extended warranty- which is exactly CPO coverage.
Sometimes the price a dealer wants for a CPO car is much more that a private sale plus the cost of the BMW warranty...because they are targeting buyers that are fearful of not buying from a dealership. |

Any clue what that gold plan extended warranty runs? I have a 2008 4.8 with all the options I want that is being sold privately for $32K and has just 19K miles. Am trying to arrange to look at it and at that price would definitely be worth looking at.

That is a good price, assuming excellent condition. I just sold my 08 4.8, sport pack with 214's, 36k miles for $39000, no CPO, broker took 1500 for marketing and commission.
