My wife's X5 has a problem with the key fob getting stuck in the ignition from time to time. We are not able to lock the car when the key fob is stuck so we are now unable to drive the car due to someone being able to steal it if left unattended. This happens about once a week with no rhyme or reason. Last night she returned from work and was unable to get the key out. I messed with it for about 30 mins. I started and stopped it, put it in drive and reverse and back to park, and took it for a drive. I finally left the in the garage with the key in it. I took a video of the problem just in case the dealer could not get it to do it. I went out into the garage six times last night trying to get the key out. Still no luck. I called the dealership and was told to bring it in in the AM.
Well the key would not come out this morning so off to the dealer. I parked at the dealership and the key came out as soon as I shut the car off. I told the service manager that I had a video of the key getting stuck and advised him that I do not feel the "click" from the dash like you do when the key is usually ejected. I got a call at the end of the day saying there was no error codes and they could not duplicate the problem. This is the second time I have had it at a dealer for this problem. I called BMW NA and was told that the dealer had to have the key stick to fix the problem. There is no way that I can make this problem happen when I want so it will be hard for the dealer to make happen. The dealer told me they would not even know what to fix on it without them being able to replicate the problem. I guess looking at a diagram or replacing the mechanism that latches onto the key is not an option. So as it stands I was told by the dealer to have it towed in next time it happens.
Does anyone have access to the diagram or have any info on the fix for this? Thanks for any help, Josh.
