I listened to what other members said - When you go in to buy a car, you should look like you want to buy it today. Tell them your offer and tell them that you have your checkbook in hand rightnow.

Good break down chart.

Beside $1700 over invoice, dealer also asked additional fee for floor mats, wheel locks, sales DOC Fee etc. Doesn't new 35D come with floor mats and wheel locks?

Doc fee is also dealer profit if I understand correctly.

You might be better to go out of the area. I will do that next time when it is time to change.

Another thing bothers me is the model year, so the gas X5 is on 2012 already, but X5 diesel is confirmed still in 2011, it give me impression to order one year old X5 although we are at early of 2011.

I would probably hold on for half year if we know for sure 2012 diesel would has 40d and 8sp, but who knows.

BTW, any questions about the 35d you can fire them off my way. I took delivery back in 2009, and now close to 35K miles, and still running great. A few issues here and there .. but nothing unique to the diesel .. just x5 issues in general ... battery discharge anyone ;-)

Just FYI, i looked at getting buying my M in California instead of the Seattle area and found out that in order to avoid paying tax in California and Washington you have to ship the car at least to the California Oregon border then drive it home. If the car is driven at all in California they have to charge the tax then Washington will charge it again when you register. Shipping quotes I received from the bay area to the Oregon border were $800 and not worth the savings you get in California. If they are trying to charge for locks and mats I know what dealer you are referring to. The other one in the area is much easier to deal with. PM me and I am happy to give you a name of a CA that will give you a no nonense price.
Another option is to look South in Portland, both dealers down there seem more motivated to move inventory. When you buy in Portland they will register and collect the Washington tax for you.

Thanks for sharing your experience, I thought we may only need to pay tax difference than double taxing. So it looks like it's not so convenient to order in CA; Regarding Portland dealer, I have called one but only got close MSRP quote. Every dealer I have talked didn't seem to have any X5 in stock and trying to give a close to MSRP price.

Unfortunately my wife already test drive X5 one month ago and strongly *suggest* getting one for her, Otherwise she should be pretty happy with her Pilot.

Yeah thats whats bad about the Seattle market, not alot of dealers and not a lot of inventory so they tend to not discount as much. I am on my 5th X5 and about 15th BMW so have developed a relationship with a couple of CA's at different dealers but still shop every time. Happy to try and help you if it comes to that. Good luck you won't be dissapponted.

Ditto on the Chapman plug. Ordered it, I paid $1000 over, got eco credit, had it shipped to CA for $350. Did not pay AZ tax but had to get it smogged in CA and pay sales tax and spend 1/2 morning at DMV. Smog was a new law in 2010. Picture below was after I pulled in driveway.
