2012 X5 Fuel gauge foibles

I've got about 700 miles on my new 35i Premium now, and I've noticed some unusual behavior with the fuel gauge.

First, it doesn't fill all the way to the full mark. The needle stops just a bit shy of the full line, instead of slightly above like every other car I've ever owned. Second, the first quarter tank goes really fast - it hits the 3/4 mark after about 70 miles or roughly 3 gallons.

The rest of the gauge seems to go roughly 140 miles per 1/4 indicator, or double what the first 1/4 shows. This was almost all highway miles as I went on a road trip right after picking up the X5 (I was getting about 22-23mpg).

Anyone else notice this strangeness with their X5?

The gauge in my 35d is spot on. Seems like every small ticky mark is a gallon in fact.

My 2011 X5 has the same issue with the full tank, its always shy of the full tank mark. I have not paid attention to how the needle moves but I will do so on my first long trip with her this weekend.

I could have sworn the same thing. Mine seemed so spot on!!!

I am LOVING my new GL550, but I MISS, MISS the mpg in the 35d! I would get about an avg of like 18-20mpg in the city and at least 25+ on the highway. With the GL it's a pretty solid 10-13mpg...all the time! I fill up, and in like 2-3 days...I am already at 1/2 tank. In the 35d, I filled up like every 2 weeks. Always trade offs!!!

I had the same issue. It never went to full, even if I over filled it. After about 9 months of this, the gauge finally would stop at 1/2 tank. I took it to my dealer and they replaced the actual gauge. On my way out of the lot, same issue. After 2 more trips to the dealer, they informed me of a "redesigned" sending unit, replaced with the new unit and it has been flawless for the past 4 months. Actually, it is better than new! Hope this helps!

Seeing the same thing on my two month old 2012 X6 35i. Never quite gets to the full line. Looks like it's guzzling (or leaking!) gas for the first 1/4 tank, then settles down a bit into a more normal rate of descent. Will bring in to service next week and see what they say.

I had the same issue with my 2011 X5 50i, and now with my 2012 50i. Always seemed odd to me that the tank would be almost empty, but it would never seem to use as much fuel to fill as the stated fuel tank capacity suggested it should.

I did try topping up the tank after the nozzle clicked off a few times, and was able to squeeze about 5 litres (just over a gallon) which made the fuel guage show just over the full mark. Seems it just clicks off too early for whatever reason.

mine never gets to the full line, because I don't want to pay $100 at a time.

It was at full when the dealer filled it up after fixing a fuel gauge issue though.
