have some basic E70 questions...

first off, great forum! so happy to find such a resourceful place filled with X5 enthusiasts! in the market for a newer X5, and have a few basic questions:

1) which models E70 are there?

its my understanding from 2007-2010, there were the choice of:

a) 6 cylinder
b) 8 cylinder
c) turbo diesel

and from 2011-present
a) 6 cylinder turbo
b) 8 cylinder turbo
c) turbo diesel

is that correct?

2) can the NAV system be used while driving? my Lexus requires the car be stopped, which is a deal breaker for me as I'm in outside sales, constantly making changes behind the wheel

3) is the keyless entry such that i never take the key out of my pocket? Lexus has this, my Acura does not, can't stand needing to get key in/out of pocket all day

4) is it worth the extra money for the newer turbos, or is there greater value in the earlier e70's that have been discounted, but less power and lower MPG?

5) does the Dinan chip increase/decrease gas mileage above stock performance? (assuming the car is driven the same of course!)

6) lastly, I just priced a new X50i on BMWUSA.com, fully loaded, $80k sticker, and the quote for a lease was $2500 down, 36 months, @ $576/month, clearly this is an error?

thanks!!

i wouldn't suggest a lease if you drive the thing for work. my 2008 4.8 has 77K miles on it. i average 21k miles per year.

Correct, 3.0i, 4.8i, & 30d, 35d

and from 2011-present
a) 6 cylinder turbo
b) 8 cylinder turbo
c) turbo diesel

Correct 3.5i, 5.0i, and 35d

2) can the NAV system be used while driving? my Lexus requires the car be stopped, which is a deal breaker for me as I'm in outside sales, constantly making changes behind the wheel

Yes, not too difficult but still a challenge when driving. The new iDrive (2011 & up) helps.

3) is the keyless entry such that i never take the key out of my pocket? Lexus has this, my Acura does not, can't stand needing to get key in/out of pocket all day

Correct but optional. Comfort Access

4) is it worth the extra money for the newer turbos, or is there greater value in the earlier e70's that have been discounted, but less power and lower MPG?

In my opinion. The new 8sp is great. My 50i gets 20mpg, a 48i maybe 16.

5) does the Dinan chip increase/decrease gas mileage above stock performance? (assuming the car is driven the same of course!)

Try a search

Sounds low unless you have a big trade equity.

thanks!!

25-30k miles a year on a Lease may be a pricey option, no?

i don't lease as a rule but i would guess you would pay thru the nose for that kind of mileage.

To comment on Richard in NC's reply...

I have a 2007 4.8i and I can get about 20mpg on the highway. Not sure where he got the 16 figure from.

Around town, though, she gulps gasoline.

Yeah I get about 21 MPG Highway--around town not sure I guess 15 MPG. My '01 X5 3.0 got pretty much the same on highway but city slightly better. But the trade-off to hear the 4.8 exhaust note is worth it.

Why aren't used 50i's I'm finding CPO? They just offer remainder of factory warranty?

If it has less than 10K miles on it I believe they don't CPO them (or some low mileage amount) and maybe a combination of how many months old. Also, a a lot of CPO cars that are only 1 or 2 years old are when the dealer "buys" them back from BMWFS when they come off of their lease --they agree to buy it for X amount from BMWFS and then they CPO it (has to meet tire tread mins, etc), Mine was a lease return in Los Angeles with only 16K miles on it and 2 years old--they bought it back from BMWFS for $44K, went through the CPO process (had to put $2500 tires on it as well) and I bought it for $48K.

That's not too bad of a deal. $4k+tax+fees markup for a CPO'ed truck on new rubber? I'd do it.
