'07 owners, did you extend your warranty?
Would you do $3k for an additional 5 years (reputable company)? Sounds good for value but I'm just as inclined to bank that 3k and only use it when things happen... Another factor is mileage vs. time. I do very little miles but things like sensors probably break over time rather than mileage... true? Since those are not mechanical, the repairs may not be as high... I would ask the e53 owners, but it's a different technological beast.

No E70 here, but I had a 535i, same platform.
I sold it at the end of the warranty period, same with all my BMWs. There was no BMW extended warranty available here in Canada. If I had kept it, I would have bought a warranty, due to the amount of electronics on the vehicle. However, I wouldn't expect the price of the warranty to be comparable with the expected maintenance expense. You should never expect to come out ahead on an insurance policy (extended warranty). You should simply ask yourself what your personal tolerance is for a large repair bill, since self insuring will always be cheaper on average. It is the non-average repairs that can bite you. If you can cover an unexpected large repair bill out of cash flow, it will be cheaper to self insure.

I would ONLY consider the BMW warranty...given the potential horror stories with diagnostics and software, having a BMW dealer argue with BMWNA over coverage and time allowances seems a great plan.
I got a CPO in my M5, and that paid for itself 2x... |

Sure did. I got the extended maintenance plan as well. I have 62 on the clock and it's been good. I just had the spark plugs done, wipers replaced and brake fluid done. Beyond that I've had the steering rack fixed and the motor in my adjustable thigh support fixed on the driver's side. That is about it

I'm in a bit different of a situation but...
I bought my 07 CPO'ed back in January. My factory warranty and maintenance just ended on 8/15/11 and it feels so good to have a CPO..."just in case." Then again, it's still a step down from full warranty and free maintenance. At least it's something. I'd never buy any newer vehicle without some sort of warranty. I got rid of my E53 when my aftermarket warranty expired and haven't looked back. |

this is another reason I'm unsure about the BMW warranty over something like warrantydirect. For 3 more years, 70k total miles, my SA quoted me $4600. WD quoted me 5 more years, 60k total miles for $3800 for their top tier coverage (I've only done 22k in 4 years). If BMW covered exactly the same, I would hesitate and go with their own name, but it doesn't - it doesn't include wear & tear (like they have been for me on the original warranty), and it doesnt' cover the nav if it has previously shown issues (which mine has), among other things. I'm sure there's an official document somewhere, but with the price, coverage period, and limitations, I'm likely staying away from BMW. WD has a great reputation too... and I wouldn't be able to get better anywhere outside.
EDIT>> http://cache.bmwusa.com/pdf_297ba288...2-86ac07d46da1 I think if they list what's NOT covered it would be more beneficial. For example, I just got my car back for a "fuel level sensor wire at pump connector burnt"... my fuel gauge was behaving erratically. The doc does not specify wires or the fuel level sensors being covered. Ugh.

I had an aftermarket warranty on my '01 X5 when the factory warranty went out--they were cool at first then they started disputing everything and took days to authorize. I will never do an aftermarket again--not worth it.

Granted this is on a my 2004 E53, I bought extended 5 year 100K warranty on it 2 months before factory warranty ran out. Cost me $3,600. I had in 4 years $12K in repairs so it more than paid for itself. At the end the company sent an adjuster/inspector for each claim, the last being $5,800 to replace the eccentric shafts and also fix the broken sunroof. I had to guarantee that I'd pay the tear down costs of the engine to prove it was really what BMW service was saying it was.
I was without my car for 3 weeks for this and no rental for the first 1.5 weeks due to the delay from my 3rd party company. Then the dealer gave me a BMW X3 as a loaner. It was worth it but boy does it make you gun shy about owning one of these things after the warranty runs out.

I had my '01 X5 for almost 10 years--that thing was a tank and had very little problems. Yes, BMWs are expensive to repair (not so much if you go Indy route obviously) but the key is keeping up on the maintenance and taking care of it--they will last.

http://cache.bmwusa.com/pdf_3927f5d4...2-dce774027bde The biggest issue between WD and BMW, IMO, isn't the coverage. It is the claim procedure, the approval for dealer warranty labour rates, and the use of OE parts. Your original warranty didn't cover wear and tear either, you had a separate maintenance plan. If that is important, you can ask about buying extended full maintenance on top of the extended warranty. It is an expensive way to go, though. I assume by top tier you mean the Platinum coverage. It notes that the main wiring harnesses are covered, as well as a long list of electrical items. With regards to your fuel pump/sensor wire, though, that may be more likely to be wear and tear than a defective part. The repair kit for the plug is a few dollars, so probably not a big issue. I just use it as an example of the difference between defective manufacturing (four years ago when your vehicle was built) and something that has worn out (due to heat, abrasion, etc). Just because something is listed on the brochure as covered, doesn't mean it is covered. You have to consider the reason for the failure.
