Doing oil change on 4.8 need some info plz help

Hello guys:
I'm going to do an oil change on my car, but don't know what type of engine oil is used as "BMW High Performance Synthetic Oil" for 4.8 e70 x5? and Where is the best place to order it? Is it dealership only? Thanks

If you want to use the BMW OE oil (it is a good oil) you get it from the dealer. Advantage of that is you can also get an OE filter at the same time. My dealer had a very similar price on their 5w-30 to local auto parts stores.

If you don't want to go to the dealer, you can use any name brand full synthetic, with an API-SM rating, in a 5w-30. Mobil 1 and Castrol are popular choices. I would still use the filter from the dealer, not an aftermarket one.

Small chemical differences due to additives and base stocks. Different advertising departments for each of them, so they will each tell you they are the best, or something like that.

Each of them meets the exact same API SM (American Petroleum Institute) standard, so in terms of that independently run certification test, there is no functional difference whatsoever.

Your engine will not know the difference. I used the BMW oil because I got a filter there, and it saved me driving to the auto parts store. If your dealer is not competitively priced, I would still get an OE filter there, but then buy the oil where it is cheapest.

If you're in Toronto, I think it may not be a bad idea to use 0w-40. Both the 5w-30 and 0w-40 are approved for use in the X5.

I bought my oil from the dealer. It was actually cheaper than the german castrol Syntec anywhere else. Partsource now sells Mann filters as well.
