Arrow Mother reverses X5 on her 3-year old in driveway

Just shows the importance of Park Distance Control and Rear View Camera options.

Sydney Toddler Killed By Mother In Driveway Accident... | Stuff.co.nz

Sydney toddler has died after his mother reversed a four-wheel-drive car into him, emergency services say.

Police said the three-year-old boy had been standing with his father and four-year-old brother outside the apartment block at Clement Place, Rushcutters Bay, about 10.45am (1.45pm NZT) today, waiting for their mother in the car.

Just how the boy came to behind the car has yet to be established.

It is understood that the four-wheel drive was not fitted with a reversing camera.

The boy's parents have been too shocked to talk to police about what happened.

Superintendent Sue Waites said the family were all headed out together when the incident occurred.

"Regardless of whether you have a (reversing) camera children can very quickly run behind a vehicle," she said. "You need to know where your children are at all times."

A NSW Ambulance spokeswoman said paramedics performed CPR on the boy and he was taken to Sydney Children's Hospital at Randwick, where he died.

A resident at the Marine One block of apartments along Clement Place, Alec Goins, said it was a one-way laneway that leads down to an underground parking garage.

He said the residents in the block were a mix of retired people and young professionals. There were also a few families living in the block, he said.

It is believed the four-wheel-drive was an early model BMW X5. A reversing camera has been available on the X5 since its introduction in 2001 but was made standard on all new models, except the base model, last year, a BMW spokesman said.

The take-up rate for reversing cameras on the base models was about 95 per cent, the spokesman added.

The boy's death prompted police to issue this safety advice to parents:
  • When moving your vehicle put your children in your car or have an adult look after them.
  • When reversing be sure you have a clear line of sight behind your car.
  • Always drive slowly when children are around as they are unable to judge the speed and distance of traffic and their behaviour can be erratic and unpredictable.
  • Never assume someone else is looking after your child - make sure you know where they are at all times.

A good friend lost his daughter the same way. Driveway accident. Very tragic.

I do not put the car in reverse unless I know exactly where my two kids are and usually I tell my wife to be with them. Just cannot be safe enough.

My mother's friend did that. Fortunately that child survived.

Our CC Club Pro did that, last week in downtown Chicago: he & his wife were up visiting their oldest daughter who just got her first architect job there. (She is 6 feet tall, very bright, and about a 12 on a 10 point scale, imo.)

They dropped her off a downtown local bodega, orbited the block to dodge the Chitown cops, and pulled up and backed into a newly opened spot. He hit 'something', thought it was a parked bicycle, and was about to keep going when he heard his daughter screaming from under the car. She was knocked over like a bowling pin and laying under the rear of car...fookin nightmare. She is ok, with bumps, bruises and sore hip and legs; our Pro is chagrined, embarrassed, and glad he stopped. Remarkable...

Otoh, I dunno how we all managed to get through all those decades of having kids w/out squishing one, before PDC, backup cams, etc.

This is incredibly sad. I can't even imagine how distraught the parents are. I wouldn't wish that upon my worst enemy

You are an idiot if you rely on reversing cameras and back up sensors to protect children and animals...

And therefore they are convenience options and should not be considered "safety equipment"

IMO

So many people are in such a hurry to run around doing this or that and are oblivious to the most important things.

I mean...like isn't BMW responsible for this accident since they didn't make backup cameras standard from the beginning so that I can text, eat, and put on make-up while reversing the car so I don't hit my kid??!!

Please people...act like adults and take some f'n responsibility for your children's safety.

this can happen to anyone's kids as they're playing in the neighborhood. So many kids on my block, I have to double check my rear sides, PLUS, DO RELY on the PDC cam/tone for my rear blindspot because let's face it, you can't see short-stacks directly behind you in this vehicle. I know where my kids are (either in the car with me or inside)... but without PDC, never sure if there's absolutely nobody else behind me.

Convenience + re-assurance. Use only the cam for backing up? Of course not, but it's still very important in this vehicle.
