Personally I prefer a tune that alters the DME directly as opposed to 'clamping on' items that alter inputs to fool the DME. Not sure this is available for this car yet. |

I understand that it will not affect my entire warranty on the car. However, don't be naive to think that a dealership won't try to use it against you for every little thing that could be wrong in the engine bay. Yes, you can fight it, but it does bring about more work.
Ultimately you must weigh the pro's vs the con's of adding this mod. I still haven't decided yet. I just got the car in December of last year, and the power was acceptable at the time of purchase. Although I am curious about the "more" =) Thanks for everyones response! |

That pretty much depends on your relationship with your dealer. I am a repeat customer many times over, and have referred several other customers. My sales advisor keeps in touch with me. I know several of the dealer management team, and have met the dealership owner.
When I took my X5 in for a regular maintenance service years back, and asked them to fix the rear passenger door speaker grill that my youngest daughter accidentally kicked in, they did so. When they didn't charge me, I asked why, because it certainly wasn't warranty. They agreed that it wasn't warranty, but said that they paid for it themselves on a policy basis, and told me they were glad to do so. Relationship. It wasn't a big cost, but it was a nice gesture.

I am on the edge of ordering this. It looks like the best way to have this in the car and not be worried about warranty issues is if I also order the BMW CAN Tool.
Does anyone have real experience with this setup? I have various Scan Tools that I thought I could use but Terry recommended having this. Also, is it easy to uninstall? TIA I think everyone with a X5d has noticed over their ownership that the throttle response and higher-end power feels a bit lacking. This seems like a great solution.

Renntech?
Not trying to hijack the thread, but has anybody looked at the Renntech tune for their X5 diesel?

^^^ Nice find. I like the 'change the maps and control parameters inside the DDE'approach.
$1200 is Dinan pricing... renntech needs to offer a warranty at that price (and not the happy talk on their website's section on warranty) |

Here's from where I found the info, seems like there is an active tuning discussion among the 335d crowd (same engine as in X5)...

So I know this is an old thread, and not sure if anyone even buys these anymore or not. But wanted to relate that after running one for about 3years (30-40K miles), mine (purchased second hand) died fairly spectacularly, leaving my wife on the side of the road with a non running engine.
I've run it at 100%, and gotten the 'Engine Malfunction' warning three times in the 30-40K miles of driving, always from 'giving it the beans' too soon after restart, even if it was warm. Each time a restart cleared the error, and no further issues. But this past weekend my wife was driving on the highway at steady speed when the warning came up, and mile or two later it just died, and would not restart.. When I arrived I plugged in the Foxwell and looked at the DME codes. There was a rail pressure control valve code, but it was showing not present. But the engine would not run. It would start, idle roughly for about 2-3 seconds, then die.. I unplugged the JBD and tried again, and it started right up. Has been running normally for a 100 or so miles now, so pretty sure the JBD is dead. I contacted their support, and they generously (given I bought it second hand) offered a 20% discount on a new one, but as expected, no warranty support as I was not the original purchaser.. After having lived with it for 30-40K miles, I can say the reduced 'umph', particularly when passing at highway speeds is noticeable, but I'm undecided if I want to invest in a new replacement.. So, just to add to the experiences, should anyone be interested..
