Tailgate rattle and noise

Hi All,

This week, after the 5th attempt and 2 dealerships, I got my X5 back with the tailgate noise/rattle *fixed*. The SA/Tech acknowledged the noise and said they adjusted the tailgate and there is no noise.

However, I have to close the lower portion on the trunk so hard, you won't believe it. If I shut the lower part close, the upper part won't close using the "Red auto close button" until I force the lower part with a lot of force.

The noise is somewhat gone (not entirely) but now the lower part is pressed against the rubber and it squeaks.

When I took the delivery and was about to drive off, there was half an inch gap in the lower and upper parts. The SA then took it away and came back after 10 mins - the gap was gone this time - and told me to use more force then usual if I want to use the Auto close button.

Is it normal for the tailgate to be adjusted in way you actually have to use more force than usual? I feel like I'd break it in a few months if I use it everyday. The SA told me this is the only way the noise will go away. Any thoughts?

I had the tailgate adjusted three times with no success at one dealer. After proceeding to the second dealer they fixed it and it has been quite since. No excessive force is necessary - just a tap of the autoclose button. The work order did state that they adjusted it three times on that final visit. with three road tests. Unfortunately, you need to find a dealer with mechanics who are good at what they do AND care. I have found the latter to be difficult to find.

I have also been experiencing the same rattles. I've had the lower latch replaced because it had play in it....and this seem to fix the rattles. Then after a few days of driving, the new lower latch began to develope play and the rattles came back.

The SA did admit to me that this is a known problem and design flaw. And the only real fix is to have the bump stops for the upper gate adjusted outward so that when the gate latches on, it will pull in and have more tension on it...and hopefully stopping the rattles.

Well, Ive been back to forward with the dealer and the rattles are still there. And, it has gotten a lot harder to close the upper gate as well

I used the following procedures and no more rattles:

1. see attached adjustment procedure (same as what the BMW techs use ...)

2. after, use copious amounts of a clear, silicone based lubricant, such as Wurtz, or Permatex (as long as it is water resistant) on ALL the friction and contact points. This, more than anything solved the squeeks and rattles.

Hope this helps.

Took delivery today, I got the rattle on only certain type of bumps, hard to replicate unless I keep driving over the same bumpy road. Feels like something doesn't contact well and there is a tiny gap somewhere in the back, or like a tie-down loop rattle.

Thank you do much! I went back the dealer a number of times and they keep saying I am out of the squeak and rattle warranty and for them to make the adjustments, it may not necessarily fix it..

Will try it out soon!
