Should I stay or go need your help
Don't get me wrong it's nice and I like it but since I've been over here I've fell in love with the X5 50i with the M package. Absolutely awesome. The Lexus forum says I need to stay where I'm at with the GX because of reliabiltiy. Plus trade in is killing me. 2010 Lexus GX460 premium w/ 10k miles and rear entertainment now only work $48k-$50k and that's pushing it. After a year of ownership I owe $55k. Sucks!!! I wish I'd lease but being that I'm in the military I do travel quite a bit to let the kids see grandparents from time to time. What are your thoughts guys? Seemingly an econ decision, aside from the 'I want one' urge...that upside down value is a real bite, and none of us can know your situ, dough-wise, and whether you are willing to walk away with that hit for a car. I would not, but just opin.
Maybe hunt up slightly used? Thank you for your overseas service, keep your damn head down, and we are also grandparents but our Kidz have figured out that 'we go to them', GL, mD

Anytime But seriously the BMW is a far different vehicle then the RR or GX as both of them are dialed for comfort vs. performance and the BMW is more of a sports car trapped in an SUV body so you wouldn't find many here that would drive something like a GX. I'd suggest you drive one and that should do the trick

Second, have you thought about selling it privately. I bet you could get your payoff for it, selling that way. Try eBay, Craigslist and Autotrader. They are all great ways to sell, and you might be able to do a deal quickly. I would imagine a low mileage GX would be a desirable car to many. Just be ready to rent something (do a monthly rental on hotwire) while you wait for your new X5. Make sure you understand all the rebates available for the X5. These can bring down your price significantly. Realistically, you should be able to buy any X5 for $500 over invoice BEFORE any rebates are applied. To get invoice price, go to www.bmwconfig.com and build out your car. The current rebates I know of are: $1730 Nav Credit (35i and 35d) $2500 Eco Credit (35d) $1000 Mission to Drie Credit (All X5's) $1000 Owner Loyalty (if you have/had a vehicle financed through BMWFS in the last 6 months). Additionally, there is "Conquest Credit" available for people moving over from competing brands - like Mercedes, Audi, etc. I would imgine you would be eligible. You'll need to research this... So, when you factor in all these rebates, in the case of the X5 35d, you can get about $10K+ off MSRP. This may be enough to justify taking a small hit on the GX. If you have more questions, just let me know. BTW, I have the 35d and love it. It's worth driving if you have never tried one. It has the torque of the V8, but is a bit cheaper and slightly better on fuel economy. Maybe it's an option for you... PS: Thank you for your service to this great nation... |

My last car was a GX470. I held onto it long enough to see what the GX460 would be like.
I took one look and said "OK.. X5 it is." And I've never looked back. When you factor in many things.. These were my personal factors.. - maintenance for 50K miles is included - and it doesn't need to go in every 5K miles like the Lexus - you can get more features on the X5 (HUD is my favorite) - it's a nicer car (much less plastic) - more comfortable - NAV is nicer (you will not miss the touchscreen) - WAY more fun to drive I wrecked my GX once because it was such a bore to drive I actually fell asleep and hit the guardrail. I suppose the new one is fine, but in my opinion, it is not built at a level commiserate with it's price. I too was worried about reliability, but I have not had any issues with my X5. The service "experience" is not nearly as good as Lexus, but it needs service much less often. The Mark Levinson sound system is better - I had ML at home but swapped it out for Classe |
