Engine Hum/Whine Under 1000 RPM?

Hi All:

I have a question that I hope somebody on here can help me with.

I have a 2008 4.8. For several months, I've heard a low pitched whine or humming noise when my X5 downshifts into first gear when coming to a stop or going slowly in traffic. It's usually between 500 - 100 RPM and then it disappears once I get moving. Every once in awhile, there is a vibration along with it. You can't hear it outside, but it is noticeable when sitting in the car. It seems to come from the drivers side.

I've taken it to the dealer several times and they have replaced the steering pump and steering pressure hose but this doesn't seem to have fixed the issue.

They also told me that the X5 "makes an engine noise". However, I don't remember that being the case for the 1st three years of owning the car.

Any thoughts on what this might be if anything?

Thanks so much.

Really try an isolate your symptoms if you can... how warm the car is, what driving you were doing, once the whine shows up, can you shift to neutral and it goes away? back into drive does it come back? In neutral can you very gently rev the engine and get the whine to respond? or is it car speed related?

Noises are so very difficult to troubleshoot....

Thats all I have...

Yeah, mine ALWAYS has done this (2007 4.8) and I figured it was just a noisy transmission. However, it then modulates and kind of varies in speed. So while trying to figure out what it was, I turned the blower off, and shablam - no more noise. I suppose having a noisy/faulty blower fan is better than a malfunctioning transmission...yeah?
