What would you buy 2008 3.0si or 4.8i

I'm looking into getting a preowed X5, I have found to two locally that I like. One is a 4.8 with 51,000 miles fully loaded with everything except for 3 row seating and rear seat entertainment price $31,000. The other is a 3.0si with 21,000 miles premium package, 3rd Row Seat, and Rear Climate Package price $33,000.

The question which do you guy believe to be the better value. The 4.8 with all the options that I would love to have vs the 3.0 with very low miles. Both trucks are out of warranty so I would have to get a extended warranty.

I leaning towards the 4.8 for the simple fact that it does not have the 3rd row seat and I can carry a spare tire under the floor. I not sold on the idea of run flats only tires. But 21,000 miles and clean car fax does sound good.

Opinion needed thanks.

There are a couple of things to consider... Most folks who own the 4.8's are wanting sportscar like acceleration capabilities.. The 30si is going 0-60 7.8 seconds vs. the 4.8's 6.4... Big difference in the drivability of the cars... I own an X5 4.4 and an X6 50i... I have them because I tend to like to get from point A to B in hurry.. How long are you planning on owning the car? The loaded 4.8 will be an easier resell than the dime a dozen 3.0... Both are out of warrant so I would assume you are going to an aftermarket warranty either way.. kinda makes the mileage of them somewhat of a mute point.. Both cars under warranty the mileage will only come into play during the resell... if you are gonna flip the car in a year or two that would make the mileage difference a bigger deal... You only live once... get what you want vs. what would be the best deal....

I have not had a single regret that I bought a 4.8i; there is no way I would buy a 3.0si.

Depends on how you like to drive. If I was shopping now, I'd buy the X5 with the most powerful engine that I could afford.

Totally agree. I'd be kicking myself if I didn't get a 4.8i.

5 years and 110K miles later..................... 4.8 all the way.

I test drove both when I bought and the 3.0 just didn't drive like the chassis was designed to drive IMO. The added weight in the nose makes the truck feel more solid, again IMO.

the 3.0 is just the shell of a car. get the v-8 its the real bmw experience. I bought a v-6 treg in the past and regretted it every single day.

Coming from a 2005 3.0, and moving to a 2007 4.8 (and having test driven a few 2007+ 3.0s), I would NEVER buy a 6-cyl again. These V8s are just too mean. I'm hoping to go for a 5.0 in the future, maybe in another year or two, as my 2007 only has 56k miles on 'er and is like new.

Interesting. I have both the 3.0si(2007) and the older 4.8is (2005). I love the 4.8 for the power and sporty drive. It's def. a head turner. The only thing I hate about it is the fuel consumption. It's brutal! And , it's a rough ride if you live in areas where streets are not nice and flat. It's pretty much in all ways a sports "car"....

The 3.0is is pretty much all the opposite. It's smooth , refined and with the "si" model you get something like 50hp more than the regular i6 (3.0i). So it doesn't lack power. Of course it can;t be compared to the 4.8 power-wise but it still has some kick to it.

Also , the noise level in my 4.8 is higher and the price of those freak-en staggered tires is scary(you can always go squared though). But bottom line , the 4.8 has that exiting and fun factor to drive VS the relaxing and smooth factor for the 3.0si....

Good luck and report back with your choice ;-)

i've driven both models and personally i think the 3.0 is way to underpowered. too much down shifting to get some acceleration out of that small engine

Macintoshse,
You are mixing apples and oranges here (engine size vs. 3rd row).
First, decide if you like v8 vs l6 (after extensively driving both), then whether you need 3rd row or not.
Otherwise, you will find yourself regretting the purchase (either due to 3rd row, or engine size).
