Changed Spark Plugs today on the V8 and can't get the last coil

I couldn't find any DIY on a spark plug change for the 4.8 E70 so I figured how hard can it be. To do it you need to take off the entire induction system and then you can access the valve covers to the coil packs. The tricky part is the back two coils, I used two 3" extensions that I could use to reach the rear plug on the passenger side.

Try as I might though I could not get the furthest coil pack out on the drivers side. There just isn't enough clearance, I loosened up the power line and moved the heater hoses but it still wouldn't come out.

I am looking for some advice from somebody who did it, how they got it out. I couldn't figure it out.

I just finished this job tonight... took about 2 hours. 7 plugs took about 40mins and I spent the rest on the driver's side rear plug (including retrieval of the coil I dropped behind the engine)

I'll do my best to explain how I got the coil out and in. As mentioned move the heater hoses out of the way, I found it best to move one up and push the other down out of the way. I worked kneeling on the engine. After the coil is disconnected pull it out as far as you can with a little downward pressure and with a twist and the cam in the down position it will slide just under the metal "ledge" and above the black bar. Next push on the head of the coil to rotate towards the back of the vehicle, it will slide along under this "ledge" and finally come free. I have medium hands and was able to work it out ok. To replace it, it is simply the reverse but start by getting the tip of the coil into or near the hole and then use two hands to guide it into place. And oh yeah try not to drop it behind the engine - that's even harder to get out.

Good luck!

You guys are the best! I was looking everywhere to find a DIY on spark plug replacements but this is the next best thing.

This the only maintenance item left as requested by the dealer. I missed my maintenance period by 1 month and they want $800 for it.... yea right!!

Thanks again.

How many miles are you replacing the plugs at? What plugs are you using?

43k with a 4.8 e70. Dealer claims you service your sparks after every x amount of oil changes. The plugs i got were Bosch Spark Plug - FR7KPP332 on turner motosport for 12 a pop.

When I had my 07 4.8i I moved the heater hose out of the way and then removed the plastic hose holder/clip and I was able to get it out.

My mechanic said that his instructional software notes that he has to remove the windshield wiper assembly to make space for the spark plug install.

Did you guys have to do that?

Thanks Repete for the detailed instructions! It helped me out a lot. I tried prying on the hose holder but it wouldn't come out (I just bent it)..

To neosoul: There shouldn't be a need to remove the windshield wiper assembly.

I do recommend taking the locking connector off of the top of the coil to reduce the size and make it easier to maneuver (just pry near the two pins on each side). Also, if you are attempting to do this job, note that you will need a 5mm socket to take care of the coil retainers (see: BMW V8 N62 – Coil and Spark Plug Removal, Coil Retainer Clamp | Bavarian Autosport Blog). The one near the front of the car I removed completely but because the area in the back is so cramped I was able to just loosen this bolt and rotate the coil retainer out of the way (it is very study plastic). Finally, be extra careful when removing the passenger side valve cover. Grip with a sturdy pull and don't bend near the two retaining points (do the drivers side first for a reference) or the plastic may break off right at the retaining pin.

Finally got around to doing this.

The suggestion to remove the clip top was key in removing that inner most driver side coil. After removing the cap, I just pulled the coil out and upward.

Removing the spark plug required a spark plug socket + universal joint + 3 inch extension + 1 inch extension + roto head ratchet.

Otherwise I couldnt get the torque required.

I didn't have to remove the coolant hose clip either, just spun it out of my way.

Thanks again for the help guys. The funny thing is I did the harder side first and now the passenger side feels like there is a TON of space hahaha.
