11 Xdrive 5.0 Low Speed Throttle a Little Jumpy

Does anyone else with a 4.4 TTV8 think the throttle response at low speeds is a little bit edgy? What I mean, is from low speeds when I go to press down on the accelerator I need to be more careful than I would care to. I need to exercise more concentration than I think I should in order for the car to accelerate slowly and evenly.

Example - someone (my wife, myself or one of our daughters) will be stopped at a corner waiting to pull out and turn the corner. Then, traffic will clear up enough to pull out and turn, as long as one does it reasonably soon. It is at this point when you try to moderately accelerate that it becomes difficult to give the car "just enough" throttle to pull out quickly, but not unnecessarily fast. What usually happens is the car (it does have the ability) pulls out under too much throttle and the driver ultimately, says to the passengers, "sorry about that" (as the car rips around the corner unnecessarily fast).

Don't misunderstand me - I love my 5.0, and it is a beast, but it would be nice if I could dole out the power in finer increments, as need dictated.

Thx!

Is this your first turbo gas car?

When people drive my race car they have the same issue, is it possible you are getting a bit of lag but then boost comes on but you have the pedal down too far at that point and you are hauling all of a sudden?

I don't think it is a turbo motor thing. My '08 4.8i does the same thing and it was one of the few things I do not like about the vehicle. My E60 with 4.4 liter V8 does not have the touchy throttle. I think the issue is software related that possible an update might solve.

conedoctor,

I have had many turbo vehicles, but this is my 1st BMW turbo. I am very well acquainted with turbo lag, and can accept it and deal with it given the other advantages offered by turbo motors. However, what I am describing with my 5.0 is different - it is a peculiar difficulty controlling the throttle while beginning from a stop or from very low speeds. While pushing the accelerator pedal I find my brain going into uber concentration mode in an attempt to accelerate at "just the right amount" that I am looking for in a given circumstance. Does this make sense? In my other vehicles I can accelerate from a stop (perhaps) with 15 or 20 different degrees of acceleration: 1 = super super slow 2 - same as #1 except after I get going I go about 10% after. 3 = 20% faster to start and then super super slow. There is an almost infinite number of variations on this all the way up to "pedal to the metal". I don't feel the 5.0 allows for the variations of takeoff that I have on other vehicles I have owned. And, in rode to get it to takeoff reasonably close to the degree of acceleration I want I have to put forth an unusual amount of concentration and foot finesse.

I feel like I need to exaggerate what I am experiencing beyond the reality in order to fully describe it, so please don't think it is just quite as bad as I describe.

When the vehicle is moving at speed I believe the problem is still there except the "twitchiness" is masked/subdued by the speed of the vehicle.

I did the throttle reset suggested in another thread here, and I think this may have helped a bit (not sure as I haven't driven enough yet - just did it yesterday).

Don't get me wrong I LOVE my 5.0 - it is a fantastic vehicle - I am describing the one thing I am just not thrilled with about the car.

Do you see what I am driving at? There are an almost infinite number of variations on how fast one might want to begin a car's initial acceleration all the way up to launch mode or "pedal to the metal". My X5 5.0 simply does not allow for the variations of takeoff speeds that I have on other vehicles I have owned. And, in order to get it to takeoff reasonably close to the degree of acceleration that I want I have to put forth an unusual amount of concentration and foot finesse (others have called it feathering but this isn't quite the right word).

I feel like I need to exaggerate what I am experiencing beyond the reality in order to fully describe it, so please don't think it is just quite as bad as I describe - I embellish to make my point.

My thought is that it is the Valvetronic control software that is making the throttle touchy. You are probably still under warranty, so take it in and complain. BMW will probably update software to solve the issue. I am out of warranty, so have been hesitant to pay the cash to have it done.

The BMW throttle delay (from standstill) makes me do the same thing. When pulling out into moving traffic I have to apply a decent amount of throttle to overcome the 0.5 sec lag to get it started then almost ease back once it gets going. I even tried Dinan to eradicate it with no luck. I switch daily between a car with a throttle cable and the X5 so it is always noticeable to me.

The throttle reset is a message board myth as far as I am concerned. Might have been something to it years ago.
