High Mileage Purchase?

Hello ladies and gents, I'm looking at used X5's and my price range $15,000-$16,000 there isn't much I'm seeming to find. But when I do find one I expect it to have somewhat of a high mileage. Is there anywhere I should bring it to be inspected before I buy it? Thanks guys, have a good day.

look at a well maintained e53 and see if you can afford an extended warranty through fidelity. if you like i can put you in contact with someone who can get you the most competitive price around.

You better be handy with your own repairs or the 15k will be just the beginning of it.

+2...I think that most people who are semi-handy can get by on a 3 series, but the X is a different animal...

If a car costs $60k when new, when its value drops to $15k the cost to repair is still a "$60k car".

Unless you can afford the occasional $1000 repair, and the catastrophic $7k repair, you better be a good DIYer.

Yes, get it inspected (asking that tells me you are NOT a DIYer) but they cannot inspect for 'what will fail in 2 months'...

I just bought an e53. My original budget was $15k and everything I found was worn out, poorly maintained, and not worth buying.

I upped my budget to $20k and found a beautiful, 1 owner, 2006 e53 4.4i with tons of regular dealer service showing up on the Carfax. Plus I added a 3 year warranty just in case.

I'd recommend increasing your budget if you can.

My E53 is well maintained and in pretty solid condition, and if it was for sale I would be happy to get $15k for it (2005 4.8is 135k miles). I bought it with 95k miles and have done a bit of repair on the air suspension (bad wiring apparently from a previous repair) and a couple of coils. Pretty much trouble free otherwise.

I don't have any fear of high mileage BMWs that have been properly maintained, and I recognize that any used purchase will have some needs to get it to my standards. Just do the model research to know what to look for, and have it inspected or know/trust the seller. Usual precautions coupled with patience produce the best results.

New cars can suck too, and even with a warranty you still have the hassle. Got your GT3 back from Porsche yet, or how about that Chevy with a recalled ignition switch? Lottery, IMO.

This.

I didn't exactly know what I was getting into when I bought a used M5. Compared to other $20-25k cars, the $120 oil changes poked me in the butt and woke me up to harsh realities.
