Curb Damage

Hello All,

First message here, but was pretty active on E46fanatics board. Last week I think my wife hit a curb with our '12 X5d. She claims she didn't hit anything, but there's a huge gash in the tire sidewall along with a large chunk of paint missing from rim.

I'm planning on taking it tomorrow to get an alignment done. Car drives straight on freeway, but does tramline when the road slopes to the right. I checked tire pressure and brought it back to 33psi. When I did that I noticed that when the wheel goes over bump it seems to pull to side.

I'm certain there's some suspension damage, but has anyone heard of the x-drive unit being damaged by curb hits? I know its premature to be worried, but none the less I worry.

One of the other items that I am concerned of is replacing the tires. I called up to Costco locally to see if they had a replacement tire. They said I'd have to replace all 4. Sucks because the tires have 12000 on them and still have at least 6/32 or more on all of them. I know on older 4wd cars it can mess up the tranny if you don't change all 4. Is that the general consensus on the X-Drive system? I know Tire rack can shave to match, but probably would rather replace front two if I could.

Go to the alignment and it will tell you the whole story.
I had a fairly worn tire on the rear left and brand new on the rear right and it did not trigger any warning lights,so i assume that is within tolerance.

They always pull the 'you need to replace all 4' but I bought a tire from tire rack and took it it to a Mexican place. Paid $12.

Dont bring it to a dealer. And dont mention 'she hit a crub hard, I am concerned the car is damaged' as they may note that on the work order and you find yourself SOL at a later date if something comes up.

$100 for a good alignment at any shop that does alignments- like Americas Tire, Dicount Tire, Big O. BMW alignment specs are way too 'wide'- you want minimum toe. Lots of posts on this.

Or you can go to a BMW dealer if you are fearful- just be prepared to get bent over.

Winter of '12 I slid into a curb and hit both the front and rear passenger side wheels. Afterward the X pulled slightly and wore the edges of the front tires. Took it to an indy for alignment and they were not able to align it after two attempts. I then took it to the dealer who replaced a control arm and it aligned fine. I replaced one wheel because it was cracked (but still held air). For good measure I took it to a different indy for alignment this summer. The alignment was still in spec, though I did have him bring the toe to 0.00. :-)

Had a similar issue with punctured tire. My thread here.
A guy at Discount tried to sell me 4 tires, despite difference in being 2/32nds. Called BMW to confirm tolerance of 4/32 (3 mm). Then, had the tire changed by a different guy at the same Discount place. No issues.
