Mechanical Warranty Question
Just picked up my 2011 e70 this past Saturday and thrilled to have it. Currently I am out of warranty by 2 weeks but under the 50K, I got a friend of mine at the dealer that pulled some strings and got an appointment to check the car out under warranty period. So my question is. The dealer is going to grant me under the warranty up to 3 mechanical issues to be covered and no maintenance. Besides the VANOS issue which was already been taken care of. What do you guys think I should definitely get checked? Top 3 issues that need to be covered by the warranty? Thanks and any insight is much appreciated. |

You've not gotten responses becuase this is a very odd and poorly worded question.
It seems like you currently have no issues with the car, but think you can bring it in and get 'things' fixed? The "things" need to be bad... Maybe they'll 'find' stuff? See this: http://www.xoutpost.com/bmw-sav-foru...ked-me-up.html GL |

I have appointment tomorrow to get the car checked out and wanted to know common issues that are covered under the warranty period, so that I can have the tech look for those specifically. Like for example I have heard that the drive shaft on the e70's tends to give problems. Not 100% sure on this See I am coming from an e90 2006 with 100K miles, common issues with this car: -Waterpump and thermostat -Valve cover gasket -Oil pan gasket -Loose bolts All of these issue's I took care of them on my own with the DIY on e90Post. I came on here looking for some guidance from long time owners on what possible issues might arise and could possibly prevent with my appointment. Sorry if I don't make sense. I will be on here quite a bit. I was a regular on e90post! |

I have read half a million posts. I have participated and moderated BMW forums for 10 years. I have NEVER heard of someone getting a 'free 3 repairs under warranty after the fact.'
So Im going to stick by my "its an odd one" opinion. The link I gave you is an excellent place to start. |

They can't cover things under the warranty when the warranty is expired. They can cover things under a policy account, which means the warranty rules don't apply, it is more of an investment in customer retention. That said, I believe that under the deal you describe, they would look to things that have failed (an issue for warranty) and not things that are simply worn out (an issue for the maintenance plan). If that isn't true, just ask them for four new tires as one of the items, as I am sure they will show at least some wear.
If things have failed, there needs to be evidence of that failure. Unless you have some symptom (noise, roughness, etc) that could be attributed to a failed part (not a worn out part) then it is difficult to see what they would fix. The obvious thing to check is for any fluid leaks, from any compartment. A road test to make sure it drives and shifts properly. Pull the codes and see what is outstanding. Then look at the report together with your service advisor and agree with him what they will do under this gift program.

^^^^Agree. Also, specifying what engine is in your E70 may bring some opinions. But even if the dealer, with the approval of BMW NA of course, agrees to do some repairs they would be visible and problems ongoing.I dont believe there will be "goodwill preventive maintenance".But you never know.
In a few words,if the dealer has the permission from BMW NA to do the goodwill repairs it is in their interest to find problems because they will be reimbursed by BMW NA.So good luck with all of this and post back to let us know what happened. |

There MAY BE another possibility: they tag it to an earlier service visit when the car WAS under warranty and send it through that way. Yes, it is not 'how it is supposed to work'. I cannot see a dealer offering such an open ended gesture where the cost could be many thousands onto a goodwill account- if they knew what was wrong, and their exposure, they could make the call, but otherwise I think they know this will be BMWNAs dime. Of course we dont know one way or the other... |

Hi guys,
I appreciate you guys chiming in. So I dropped off the car this morning and the good news is that car is 100% no oil leaks, no problems. The one small issue, which they will cover is when I am slowing down I feel the car sputter a bit. The tech told me that its a programming/software/update that they will take care of under the warranty. So I am feeling GREAT about this purchase. I think it might be what JCL mentioned, "customer retention". This has never been about things that are worn out or possibility. This has been strictly an expired warranty and the coverage of 3 mechanical issues after the expiration. The SA is great and she said that NO maintenance would be covered such as oil change, brakes etc... Again thank you everyone for chiming in. |
