I agree wholeheartedly with upallnight on his advice about watching a youtube video. I've taught myself 90% of what I know about working on a BMW from watching videos on youtube.

As for recommendations for brake parts, I also agree with ard, who said that OE or OEM brake parts are a waste of money. On 2 of the 3 BMWs that I have owned (E46 and E53) I have used Duralast brake pads from AutoZone to do brake jobs, and I haven't owned my E70 for long enough to have needed to do a brake job. Duralast brake pads come with a lifetime warranty as long as you don't wear them down to the backing plate. If they wear out, you can bring them back in and AutoZone will replace them free of charge as long as you own your vehicle. Anyway, the Duralast parts are good and cheap, and will do a great job of stopping your car.

I usually buy brake pads for my cars on Black Friday at Pep Boys. They usually have a sale were the pads are on sale for 19.95 per axle. So for 40 bucks I can redo the brakes on one of my car. I know there are owners that only buys name brand pads for there cars, but they are also the same people that would spend hundred of dollars for a pair of gym shoe because it said "Air Jordan" on them.
