$750 Dealer Battery Replacement
I have read every post on this site about battery replacement and I can't seem to definitively answer this question??? If I buy one at Advance Auto that is the same specs as the one I take out, do I have to do anything to the computer or not??? What is coding and registering?? 2009 X5 4.8i |

Just go and buy one battery for less than $200 and everything will be fine.I promise Seriously, you dont have to register a new battery and nothing bad will happen to the car or the new battery.Or to you.

Technically, BMW have equipped their vehicles with an intelligent charging system which adapts the charging cycle based on the...and this is what I'm unsure of...either the condition of the battery or the age of the battery. The theory is that if a new battery is installed and also registered then it's charging cycle will be optimized, thereby maximising the battery's life cycle. More importantly in my opinion is the need to perform this function if the new battery is not of the same type as the one being replaced. For example, some of the older model E70's were issued with wet cell batteries while newer models have AGM units. A lot of people prefer to replace wet cell with AGM because there is no risk of contamination if the battery case is compromised for any reason. More importantly though is the excellent instant crank power AGM batteries deliver which make them favourable in very cold climates where it can be difficult to start vehicles from cold...the charging cycle of these batteries is quite different from wet cell batteries.
Long explanation I know but there you have it. |

Agree. You should be able to find someone to reset the registration, but it really doesnt matter much. CERTAINLY not $550 worth! |

....or spend the $60 on BMWHat App (Battery Reset only with Android AFAIK) & $30 on a BlueTooth Dongle and do it yourself

I changed the battery in my 2009 3.0i just over a year ago. Fortunately with this forum and a few others there was quite a bit of good information available to me. After the swap I registered the battery with BMWLogger because I was interested in some of the things it does.
One thing I ran into was after the swap I got the AWD and DSC malfunction error. Going back to the forums for a couple of hours and several beers produced several posts that said to turn the wheel full left and full right. Did that and all was well. Others had cleared it by driving but according to the posts at least one of them had done a U turn. The posts were related to removing the battery connections to do other work. tom |

My indy shop charged $75 to reprogram and like $40 to swap the batteries which was worth it. The app is good for other stuff of course.

Or, an Indie, or DIY.
The OP's dlr is obviously catering to the noveau riche/soccer mom/dad who simply want that surprisingly worn out 'too soon' batt to be replaced within the hour, at their dlr. And, I would bet a good blt of 2001 Rioja that the dlr's batteries have been sitting on the shelf for weeks/months or get a hot shot 'charge' before being installed and 'registered' by the 'tech', for that extra several hundred bucks. of 'tech stuff'.
