Non operable power liftgate

Looking for some help on a power liftgate issue. Searched multiple forums and didn't come up with a solution or a good place to start.

My problem is that the liftgate will not operate. The latch releases but the liftgate must be opened and closed by hand. When closed by hand it does latch so the interior lights go off and I don't get the trunk open message in the dash which seems to be a common problem.

When the liftgate is raised and I push the close button on the gate I hear clicking sounds from the latch area but no downward movement of the gate.

When opening or closing by hand there does not seem to be any thing binding to suggest the motors are bad.

I have slammed the lower part of the trunk multiple times as suggested in other posts to no avail.

Any ideas as to where to start?

Thanks in advance.

The only place to start is to have the car scanned with some kind of original BMW program.Pretty sure there is a code stored for a sensor or other problem. There are strong failsafe functions built-in the module because of the damage it can do.

I had a problem where the lift gate would not close and I could hear clicks in the gate. The dealer could not find any problem. I later found out that if I closed the lower tail gate with little more force everything worked properly. My guess is that there is a switch that closes when the lower tail gate closes. I have now problem now if I close the lower tailgate with enough force.

the motors on the power struts will operate if 12v applied directly to them, polarity is important only for the direction of movement.

there are hall effect sensors inside the actuators that tell the motors to stop once the either of the limits is reached, and some limits are programmable, as the system will count the revolutions of the internal spindle...

the power to the motors will be cut and reverse polarity applied if the gate is closing and encounters a detent - it will prevent the pinching...

the power will not applied to the motors if the lower gate is not closed, as the top gate needs the lower one in order to latch...

you need to check the relays that feed the motors to see if the relays are good, naturally, mentioning fuses makes no sense, you probably checked the fuses already...

Luggage compartment lid/tailgate lift

Luggage compartment lid/tailgate lift

The electrical luggage compartment lid/tailgate lift will be offered in the E70 as of 10/07. A spindle-driven system will be used for the first time.
The upper luggage compartment lid can be opened and closed automatically by pressing a button. The lower luggage compartment lid is still opened manually.
The opening angle of the luggage compartment lid can be set in five stages in the Central Information Display menu using the controller. Here, the luggage compartment lid only moves up to a set angle.
Brief description of components

The following components are described for the luggage compartment lid/tailgate lift:
Spindle drives

The spindle drives are fitted in place of the gas pressure springs on the left and right of the luggage compartment lid. The spindle drive consists of the following components:

Luggage compartment lid/tailgate lift (HKL)

Explanation
1
Luggage compartment lid/tailgate lift control unit

The luggage compartment lid/tailgate lift (HKL) is fitted in the luggage compartment on the right on the device holder. The HKL controls and monitors the function of the automatic luggage compartment lid actuation.
The control logic is connected to terminal 30g. For the load current of the spindle drives, the HKL is also connected to terminal 30.
The luggage compartment lid/tailgate lift functions between 9 V and 16 V. Outside of this range, the functions cannot be maintained.
Car Access System (CAS)

The Car Access System (CAS) receives the signal from the remote control or the identification sensor and checks it. If the check (authentication) was successful, the CAS enables unlocking for the luggage compartment lid.
Junction box electronics (JBE)

The Junction Box electronics unlock the luggage compartment lid. The Junction Box electronics are plugged into the front distribution box.
Controls

Luggage compartment lid / tailgate button, outside luggage compartment lid

The luggage compartment lid / tailgate button switches to earth. The signal of the luggage compartment lid / tailgate button is picked up by the Junction Box electronics. The Junction Box electronics signal the status of the luggage compartment lid / tailgate button via the K-CAN to the HKL.
Luggage compartment lid / tailgate button, inside luggage compartment lid

The inside luggage compartment lid / tailgate button is connected parallel to the outside luggage compartment lid / tailgate button on the Junction Box electronics. This is why the Junction Box electronics make no distinction between the two luggage compartment lid / tailgate buttons.
Luggage compartment lid / tailgate button remote control

The radio signal of the remote control is received via the rear-window aerial. The remote control receiver in the diversity module forwards the signal via the K-CAN to the Car Access System. The Car Access System has the central responsibility for the function of the central-locking system. The identification sensor used in vehicles with Comfort Access has the same functionality as the remote control.
Luggage compartment lid / tailgate button in the centre console switch cluster

The luggage compartment lid / tailgate button is resistance-coded. The status of the luggage compartment lid / tailgate button is of the by the control unit of the air conditioning system. The control unit of the air conditioning system sends the status across the K-CAN.
Contacts

Luggage compartment lid contact switch

When the luggage compartment lid is closed, luggage compartment lid contact switch switches to earth. The status of the luggage compartment lid contact switch is evaluated and made available by the Junction Box electronics.
Micro-switch, lower luggage compartment lid

Index
Explanation
Index
Explanation
1
Micro-switch, lower luggage compartment lid

The contact of the lower luggage compartment lid is designed as a micro-switch and it switches to earth. The status of the micro-switch is evaluated by the HKL. If the lower luggage compartment lid is not correctly closed, the automatic luggage compartment lid actuation cannot be executed. The luggage compartment lid/tailgate lift then generates a Check Control message and issues this via the K-CAN.
System functions

The following system functions are described for the luggage compartment lid/tailgate lift:
  • Automatic closing and opening
  • Position detection
  • Blockage identification
  • Anti-repeat circuit
  • Block conditions for movement of the luggage compartment lid
Automatic closing and opening

Activating one of the luggage compartment lid / tailgate buttons automatically opens or closes the luggage compartment lid. This does not include the luggage compartment lid / tailgate button in the centre console switch cluster. This can only be used for automatic opening.
After release by the CAS, the Junction Box electronics unlock the luggage compartment lid. First of all, the drive of the Soft Close Automatic system is activated to relax the luggage compartment lid. Then the luggage compartment lock is activated.
The luggage compartment lid contact switch switches from closed to opened and the spindle drives are activated for opening.
The luggage compartment lid is opened fully or up to the set opening angle. If one of the block conditions (see 'Block conditions') is met during the luggage compartment movement, this stops the luggage compartment movement.
Briefly pressing the luggage compartment lid button during opening stops the opening.
The function ”soft start” or ”soft stop” is integrated in the HKL. This means that, shortly before it reaches the end stops, the luggage compartment lid is moved gently into the end stops in that the closing or opening speed is lowered. (Exception: no soft stop on closing). This is achieved by changing the pulse width of the activation voltage.
In vehicles with Comfort Access, the luggage compartment lid can also be opened when the vehicle is locked. Pressing the outside luggage compartment lid / tailgate button opens the luggage compartment lid automatically. All this requires is that an identification sensor that matches the vehicle is in the immediate vicinity of the vehicle rear end.
The automatic luggage compartment lid actuation cannot be activated while the vehicle is being driven, only when the vehicle is at a standstill.
As soon as it is partially opened, the luggage compartment lid can be moved by hand towards ”OPEN” or ”CLOSED”.
Position detection

A motor is integrated in each of the spindle drives. Two Hall sensors are fitted in the motor, offset in against one another. This enables the direction of rotation of the motor to be detected. Furthermore, the distance and thus the opening angle of the luggage compartment lid can be detected on the basis of the Hall sensor impulses. The Hall sensor impulses are used, for example, to adjust the opening angle via the Central Information Display.
Blockage identification

The blockage identification takes effect on opening and closing the luggage compartment lid. A blocking of the luggage compartment movement on opening has the effect that the luggage compartment movement is stopped immediately. If the luggage compartment movement blocks on closing, the HKL activates the spindle drives briefly in the opposite direction (= reversing). If the luggage compartment lid remains blocked, the spindle drives are no longer activated.
Blocking is detected when the Hall sensor impulses are not received or when the motor current rises.
Anti-repeat circuit

To prevent the motors from overheating, an anti-repeat circuit is integrated in the HKL. The motor run time is added up for the anti-repeat circuit. If the total exceeds a maximum running time of 2 minutes, new operation is not accepted. An action that is already running is always completed. After a cool-down phase of 6 minutes, a motor run time of 2 minutes is possible once again.
Block conditions for movement of the luggage compartment lid

To prevent vehicle damage, the luggage compartment lid must not be operated in various situations.
The block conditions are listed below:
Block conditions
Explanation / note
Driving speed vmax>3 km/h
Exception: a close command is completed. Speed signal from the instrument cluster via K-CAN.
Outside temperature < - 30 °C and +80 °C
Signal of the outside temperature from the instrument cluster via K-CAN
On-board supply voltage <9 V to 16 V>

Lower luggage compartment lid not closed
Cancellation of an ongoing luggage compartment lid movement, blocking operation of the luggage compartment lid. Opening remains possible.
Engine start (status ”terminal 50 on”)
Signal from CAS via K-CAN. Cancellation of an ongoing luggage compartment lid movement, blocking operation of the luggage compartment lid.

In the event of an invalid speed or temperature signal, the luggage compartment lid can be moved.
Notes for Service department

Replacing the spindle drives

A defective spindle drive is to be replaced completely.
On replacement of the spindle drives, terminal 30g should be switched off. Otherwise, a fault code memory entry is generated and the automatic luggage compartment lid actuation will not work.
Replacing the luggage compartment lid/tailgate lift control unit

After replacement of the luggage compartment lid/tailgate lift control unit or spindle drives, it is necessary to relearn the upper end stop. To do so, the luggage compartment lid is moved at the upper end stop to block.
Blocking the luggage compartment lid and thus suppressing the Hall sensor impulses of the spindle drives marks the point of the maximum opening angle of the luggage compartment lid. A value of approx. 5 % of the total Hall sensor impulses is subtracted from this point. This is the future opening angle of the luggage compartment lid. The point is also referred to as 'Softstop'.
Softstop prevents the luggage compartment lid from opening up to the end stop, which could damage it.
The lower end stop is determined by the change of the luggage compartment lid contact switch of the luggage compartment lock from opened to closed.
Country-specific versions

US version

The luggage compartment movement only starts after the luggage compartment lid button has been released.
It is not possible to close the luggage compartment lid using the remote control.
No liability can be accepted for printing or other errors. Subject to changes of a technical nature

Left Side Spindle Inoperable

Ok, after several months I took the X5 to an independent to get my rear wheel bearings replaced and asked if they could take a look at the hatch issue.

Diagnosis is that I have a bad spindle drive on the left (driver) side. The recommendation was that I replace both spindles even though the right side is still functional.

Anybody have experience where only the non-operable side was replaced? Not sure it makes sense to replace both.

Thanks in advance,
DJ

It makes no sense to replace the good one. They are just b/s you. I had one replaced due to failure and its being fine since. They are pricey.

Follow-up - Everything is working fine now.

Ended up replacing the left spindle (driver side) sourced at roughly $325 new.

It was an easy replacement. I had to remove some of the trunk trim pieces to get to the wire connectors and the spindles have a clip that must be pulled before prying/pulling the spindle off of the nipple but otherwise easy replacement.

Golf,

glad the power gate is working now...

what happened to your old, broken one? If you have it, I'd like to get my hands on it, for some autopsy, if possible. I am in NoVA myself, in Stafford area...

thanks
