High profile tires, anyone?

Hey guys,

first of all, I apologise if this subject has been brought up before...

I'm currently running on a set of 255/55/18 winter tires on my X5 E70 and I want a new set for the next winter, and I'm thinking of 265/65/18 tires but I'm worried if they will rub against the wheel-well? What do you guys think?

I know the tires will fit the wheels, but the question is if they will fit the car...

Also, it'd be cool to see some pics of others with thick tires.

I uploaded a pic of my current setup. (the wheels are plastidipped if anyone was wondering )

You can try this: Custom rims, wheel tire packages for your ride - RIMSnTIRES.com

It allows you to compare fitment of different tire sizes and also gives you an idea on what the impact on the speedometer would be.

Seems a little aggressive to me. Also remember that as you go wider (from 255 to 265), the same aspect (55) will result in a tire with a taller sidewall.

He is going both taller and wider.

What is the reason for wanting such a tall tire on the X5?

The ability to haul ass on pavement and still do some light offroading?

I have considered a setup like that for when I want to do the white rim trail in Utah or argentine pass in Colorado. Stuff that isn't very technical but does require a little bit of ground clearance. I plan to get a set of 20" wheels and keep my 19s and put a bigger tire on it possibly. a 255/60r19 if possible. or get some 18s and do a 255/60 or 65 18. I want to do these trails again, and I don't have my 4runner that was sitting on 315/75/16s anymore

Wouldn't it most likely rub this part (see #2, #3):

People mostly increase wheel size by decreasing tire profile, so overall wheel diameter stays the same and this never becomes an issue.

In your case, this may become an issue even before rubbing the wheel arches..

Thanks for all the response.
It does seem like 265/65R18 is a bit rough, especially since for every 10mm you go wider, an extra 0.5 inch adds to the height (which I didn't know about, lol)...

Counting the diameters in inches;

A 255/55R18 tire will have a diameter of 29", which is my current setup.
A 265/65R18 tire has a diameter of 31.5".

Now, since 31.5" does seem rough... what do you guys think about 265/60R18 tires? They're a whole inch shorter than the ones above, 30.5" in diameter.

If you are worried about rubbing the spindle then I would consider a taller narrower tire like a 255/65 or 255/70 if they make such a thing. It may rub the wheel well area a little but if you don't turn lock to lock it should be fine.

They do make 255/65s for 18s and it makes it exactly a 31 inch tire. That would be your best bet imo. Goodyear makes the AT Wranglers in this size.

Its pretty easy. Look at the size you have mounted now.

Estimate clearances to anything that can rub-
1. Upright part of the wheel carrier (above image)
2. Fender liner - at ALL ranges of motion.

Then, consider sizes (radial sizes as well as 'section width'. Consider the utility of spacers (if you are using stock rims) OR....adjust the offset to move the tire away from the hub.

Fist step, looking at the current tire, will give you everything you need to oupsize on current rims. IMO

A 255/55-18 is 10.2 wide (section width, the spot that rubs) and 29.1 diameter
A 265/70 is 10.2 wide and 32.7 diameter.

Go to tirerack, click on "specs" for any tire...also be aware that these numbers vary for each model between tire manufacturers.

Finally choose a size that as decent choices and availability.
