I have a picture of the diagnostic code read print out from my local AutoZone store. I have not found a way to upload the picture here or attach it. (The Attachments button does upload it for some reason after I selected the file and clicked on the Upload.)

The diagnostic code is P0012 and the text is:

Definition
"A"camshaft position - timing over-retarded bank 1

Explanation
Camshaft actuator failure

Probable cause
1. - Mechanical timing condition

I understand the code and what the engineers decides must be the cause.

IF YOU ONLY HAD THIS CODE, then maybe the engine somehow lost time.

But if you have a CPS code, meaning the sensor is giving the DME bad camshaft position data, I would not think "bad sensor AND bad actuator"

Thats my thinking. Lots and lots of experience with the S62 (M5) double vanos system....

P0012 is the only code from the handheld reading device at AutoZone. The same from a local Advance Auto Parts store across the street from AutoZone, with a different but similar device. Unlike AutoZone, the Advance Auto Parts store doesn't gave me a print out but asked me to snap a picture off the device reading with my cellphone.

As the car currently appears to run fine, I will clean the 2 solenoids first.

Thank you for sharing your expertise.

Check engine light came on and then went away. When I checked with the Torque app, it shows fault P0012 code stored in the memory. Xchen, I was wondering if there were any further issues in your case or cleaning the solenoids solved the issues for good?

Anyone else have further experience with this fault. Any proactive maintenance I should do?

Thanks

After 2 bottles of fuel injection cleaning type in one tankful of gas and 50+ miles of accumulated driving, the Check Engine light was turned off. The car ran fine as usual, but P0012 code was still in the on-vehicle memory, via an OBD II scanner.

This BMW belonged to my wife's girl friend. A a couple of weeks ago she opted for a trade-in at local dealer. She is now driving a mid-size Mercedes-Benz SUV.
