I don't know much about it but that's what I was told today.
That all sounds rather suspicious, and the 10k oil change interval is cringe worthy.

Looking at the receipt, it states
"Replace 12 volt battery as per cbs data" and
"Remove and replace battery and register as per cbs data" and
"Short test to register battery"
The part is 61-21-2-353-812 and it's called EP battery 92ah
That sounds like the main battery. I wonder if there really is a second battery. Maybe there's some type of secret recall?

I just found this. I'm still not sure what the issues are that necessitate a battery change

Related to BMW's way to recharging the battery in a fuel efficient ways...in certain type of driving conditions, some cars may not get their battery charged optimally....

Here is the article from Road & Track.

Enginerdy: Why BMW's N63 twin-turbo V8 eats batteries

To sum it up,

Brake Regen Tech
Cafe Standards
Batteries only shallow cycled charged

Add to that, turbos discharge batteries

I suspect this is the primary reason why BMW switched to AGM's (AGM's fare better in discharges)

LOL. I hemmed at hawed after burning up 2 AGM's in our E53 in less than 3 months...
Have ran AGM in most of the rides, if not the 2 garage queens @ home
Went back to flooded
Flooded has higher CCA, higher Reserve for a like2like AGM equivalent.
Can take a burp or 2 in the face with higher voltage whereas AGM's are a touch-e more sensative --- more princessy.

For a daily driver, I do think flooded may be a superior application than AGM.
Marketing aside...

But 2 batteries sound about right under warranty. Every 2 oil changes, it gets a new battery. By the time you hit the 4th oil change, you may or may not have exceeded the mielage under warranty.

How is it that all the other cars in the world make it 5-8 years before a battery change, but somehow these new v8 bmws need one every two years?

All the other excuses -er 'reasons'- apply to other cars on the market.

Anyone that thinks this is anything other than an epic failure of design and engineering is nuts.

It's cringe worthy because BMW dropped the oil change interval from 15k to 10k to try and hide the excessive oil consumption, by hoping owners would get to 10k miles before the low oil warning appeared...

Actually its cringe worthy because the original BMW OCI was allowing excessive ENGINE WEAR due to fuel shearing (lowering oil viscosity), creating hidden damage in these motors- BMWs response was to lower the OCI so as to reduce the odds that these motors would fail on their dime.

IMO unrelated to a low oil warning or oil consumption....

(year old thread, but yeah)

Source?
I just repeated the information from the above linked Road & Track article,
Enginerdy: Why BMW's N63 twin-turbo V8 eats batteries
You may be right though.
