35d Extended Emissions Coverage Question (CEL Illuminated)

Posted this on another forum but posters here seem to be a little more DIY oriented when it comes to repairs so figured I'd ask here as well.

Which components are covered by this? I know that multiple extensions on individual parts have been issued and was hoping to get a consolidated answer here. So far, I have found:

HPFP - 10 years/120k miles

F10 5er has the below, do they also apply to the F15 X5?

NOx Sensors - 10years/120k miles
O2 Sensor - 10 years/120k miles
EGR valve & cooler to 10 years/120k miles

Reason I am asking is I am trying to determine to diag myself or just take to the dealer. I imagine min cost would be diag of ~$250. Recently got CEL when cold front came through and freezing temps rolled through for a week. Codes as follows broken up by system/module:

Code: 253400 DDE, Swirl flap actuator, position control. Swirl flaps open too wide
Code: 26F500 DDE, SCR System efficiency too low
Code: 26F600 DDE, SCR system efficiency too low (metering)
Code: 288B00 DDE, Power management: Standby current violation

Code: 805268 SCR, Recirculating pump unit activation not plausible

Code: 482943 EDC, vertical acceleration sensor value implausible
- $201.11 Front Strut Acceleration Sensor @ Turner Motorsport pn:37146876451

Already ordered the accel sensor as indicated, though unsure when it will get here as Turner just emailed saying it's delayed to ship until 15 March. Any thoughts on the others? Should I just take it in? Pay the diag and go from there? I will not just clear SCR related codes as I have learned that lesson already with our E70 diesel where the reset triggered the no start countdown.

I'm not sure what the extended (silent) warranties apply to as they don't really publish that information to the public. A few dealer bulletins have been leaked here and there, but that's not definitive.

With our dealer, they have to do the diagnostic process in order to determine if anything is covered, but they said if there was a covered item, we wouldn't have to pay a diagnostic fee. Even though I already ran the INPA diagnostics, they wouldn't entertain questions about whether or not components were covered. Your dealer may behave differently.

In your case, I'm wondering if everything was triggered by a weak battery, which can happen in extreme cold temps. I would have gotten a full charge into the battery, reset all the codes, and see if they return in warmer weather. But, I'm curious when you say you learned your lesson about clearing codes on your E70 triggering a countdown to no-start. I haven't come across this - what happened there?

Thanks for the reply. Yes, I am going to hook it up to ISTA to see what the dealer's test plans will be for diag. As in your case, dealer doesn't really care for inquiries about possible coverages and will only start that conversation after diag has been done. Called today for a walk-in as I had the day off but they are booked. No problem, want to finish the E61 and get it on the road again anyway before dropping the F15 off.

The battery is only 1 year old and was registered when installed so, while possible, I don't think it's the battery. Never has a problem starting the car and don't get any funky electronics behavior like we did before we replaced the battery (iDrive shut downs mainly but low voltage codes were present as well). That 288B00 code for power management is due to our dash camera being left on and the vehicle parked for longer than 2 days. We typically unplug the camera but sometimes forget.

I need to take it on a long drive to trigger a regen. If the truck regens naturally I am assuming that it will turn off the CEL by itself. NEVER clear an SCR inefficiency code on a BMW diesel (maybe any modern diesel as I've heard of Dodge and Ford trucks having this issue too). It will trigger the system to initiate a no start countdown due to "incorrect DEF fluid" if the DDE still detects a problem with the system. I learned that on the E70 as 50 miles after clearing that code it started the countdown, then locked itself. I have to send out the DDE to unlock it so I can continue diag and work on the SCR system to get the damn truck to decide everything is fine. Stupid system BMW put in place... but it is what it is. I've learned a lot about how that system works and once I get the DDE unlocked should be okay going forward.

Well currently, for my '18 F15 35d, there are two open recalls which I'd consider one step further than extended warranty. They are:
1) HPFP, which was (finally) issued July 2021. The remedy is available
2) EGR cooler, which was issued Nov 2021. Remedy isn't yet available.

I'd validate your VIN qualifies (not sure why it wouldn't, admittedly) https://www.bmwusa.com/safety-and-emission-recalls.html

Take it in if you're up for the HPFP replacement and, at that time, I'd imagine they'll do a full diagnostic as part of the recall procedure (aka free).

Thanks for the info. My VIN shows only one open recall... the EGR cooler. Seems the HPFP recall is only for 2018 (maybe 17) models and the rest of the N57 engines get a 120k mile extended warranty on it.

I'm finishing up a rehab of my E61 wagon so afterwards I'll take in the F15 to the dealer and see what they say. The diag fee is considered cost of doing business for BMW ownership. Normally I'd diag at home, but not with something that might still have an emissions warranty.

Looking again, its shows for MY2014-2018, so that implies all or a vast majority of the units. PDF attached, go to Q&A section.

What year is yours and anything notable on the VIN such as very early production number? But I suppose its a moot point since you've already used your VIN.

I would go to the dealer under the guise of the EGR cooler, and they I'd be hopeful they would do an assessment while you're there.

Update on this. CEL has been intermittent since temps have risen. On one day off a couple days, rinse, repeat.

Was at BMW Saturday in the E53 picking up some bolts for my E61 valve train and the service bay was dead so talked to one of the SAs and they said to bring the F15 in since the CEL had come on that morning. Was prepared to pay the $180 diag and be told problem would be $$$$$$$$ and not be covered.

They didn't find (or didn't mention) any of the codes I mentioned above. But instead, they found:

2B6200 - NOx sensor before DeNOx catalytic converter, plausibility: Sensor self-diagnosis of sensitivity

As a result, and unbelievably, they replaced both NOX sensors with in-stock components following SI B13 03 14, programmed, and cleared codes. Could not believe those NOX sensors were in stock. No charge, and picked up the F15 that evening at closing. We drove it to Houston and back the next day and aside from the X5 deciding that it needs a top up of DEF, we had no issues and were CEL free.

Will continue to monitor the situation as I believe those other codes we had to be temperature related... but maybe not. Nice to get a "win" for once and not have to spend a lot of money or do a lot of work.

Attached find NOX repair SIB and warranty extension.
