Sorry, no Hofmeister kink on X-series BMWs going forward. X5 will have X1 and X3 like kink, which will be design trademark of X-series BMWs.
See below from BMW's site. It says its a trademark for "Rear-wheel drive"

I'm guessing it is 4-5" longer to 195-196"

I did some very un-scientific measurements of the X15 5.0 above with an E70 5.0.

Based on the distance of the fuel-filler door to the back edge of each car leads me to think there is about a 4-5" increase in overall length of the X15.

Using the photo of the "build your own X5" and comparing the photo with the actual specs of the car gets me to an approximate 1/20 scale.

Then, zooming on the photo of the X15 above so that it approximates the size of the E70, the distance between the fuel filler door is approximately 1/4" longer in the photo of the X15. Multiplying that 1/4" by 20 gets 5" in additional length, all of which appears to be behind the rear wheel well.

Again, completely unscientific but there does seem to be a little more "car" behind the back wheel well on the X15 than on the E70.

Could be camouflage but my guess is an extra 4-5" of rear space.

LeMans - any thoughts on my guess?

That's probably in the range.

Since X3 has grown in size to almost E53 X5 size, BMW is positioning this as M-B GL competition and further differentiate between X3 and X5.
X3 grew up in size to make room for X1.

Some X5 owners will be moving to X3 in future.
X3 sales are on the rise and for the first two weeks 2012 BMW made more X3s than X5s in Spartanburg.
X3 - 5752 units
X5 - 4152 units
X6 - 1794 units

That is a mistake by BMW; the kink on the X1 and X3 are nowhere near as elegant.

+1

Also think its looking like a Audi Q7.... that extra 5" is all going to 3rd seats and that extra hangover makes it roll like a beachball though I'm sure BMW engineers will solve most of that.

I think it also looses its "punchy" stance by being elongated.

There is nothing relative to compare with in spy pics but it does not look as tall, though this trick on the eye could be down to the increased length.

TBH I would never downsize to new X3 as its not roomy enough & compared to older e53 generation its still smaller inside. Quite glad I bought my e70 last month as I was swithering on waiting for 3rd generation, but this would be just too big for my needs (& all those discounts will dry up on new model launch)

I still have some hope for Hofmeister Kink.
Looking at pictures of interior and exterior, I did not see the line rise (in the ugly way of X3).
I have looked at my E70 from the same angle as the pictures show inside of the 3rd row window, and they look identical.
So, I keep my fingers crossed for back windows looking similar to e70.
