No diesel for the F15 in the US?

Seems hard to believe, but I doubt somebody would make this up. Although it is a foreign-based website, so perhaps something was lost in translation:

US Market Will Receive a Whole New Set of Diesel BMWs - BMW Power

That said, what I wanted all along was a 3-series Touring with a diesel anyway...

I hope that's not the case, and is a backwards move by BMW. Hopefully they're not trying to replace the diesel X5 with a silly hybrid.

Hiss... This better not be true or I'm leaving the brand because I'm absolutely getting a diesel for my next SUV

Several websites are reporting that the X5d will be delayed from the introduction of the new X5 in mid 2013. I have seen reports of late 2013 and early 2014 for the diesel. That could be due to limits in production ramp-up, or US certification of the new diesel engine.

They are also reporting that the X5 will be available with four cylinder engines (gas and diesel) as well as the larger engines, but no mention of which markets that will apply to.

This post references the new BMW diesel line up:

Delayed is fine by me, and it would probably be late 2014 before I'd be looking. If they don't offer a diesel, I too will look elsewhere.

Unless plans have changed in the last month, MY2014 F15 diesel production will start in 12/2013 for the US market.

The question is, what will happen with the production of E70 diesels? Will they continue until the F15 diesel production starts or will they stop in July 2013 along with the gas versions?

It is hard to imagine that they would keep two platforms of X5 models (E70 and F15) in production at the same time, to accomodate two engine options. My bet would be that diesels would not be available in the interim.

It's strange how fuel types have changed over the years, but in the UK petrol consumption has dropped over 25% over the last few years, partly due to the cost of fuel, partly due to a switch to smaller engines 1,000cc turbocharged), but mainly due to the massive swing to diesel power across all cars. More than 50% of all new cars being registered use diesel power.

With the diesel markets elsewhere around the world outside the US becoming ever larger, and the challenges of getting multiple engines approved by both State and Federal Regulators (the EU has just one for the entire area) it's hardly surprising that BMW have limited the range on offer. Other manufacturers may well be doing the same. The costs of multiple testing regimes would be (and probably is) prohibitive.

In the EU the 35d was phased out in 2010 and replaced with the cleaner and more efficient 40d, and now the M50d versions. We also have standard and performance diesels on the forecourt too.

I guess that until the car user market demands that forecourts offer diesel on all forecourts the US is in a Catch22 situation.
