Door #1 or Door #2?
#1: X550i w/the following-- MSport w/20" Mocha Dakota Fineline Pure Wood Dynamic Handling Pack Lighting Pack Spare Tire Surround View $80975 or #2: X535i w/the following-- MSport w/20" Paint Mocha Nappa (Mocha Design Pack w/Multi-contour seats) Fineline Pure Wood Driver Assistance Pack Driver Assistance Plus Pack Dynamic Handling Pack Lighting Pack Premium Pack Harman-Kardon Spare Tire $78450 I've never driven an X5 with Adaptive Drive/Dynamic Handling Pack, so I'm not sure if I'm gambling on whether it is worth the premium. Of course everyone that has it loves it. My priority (although it would be my wife's car) in comparison to the E70 is quicker and flatter handling. Comfort is nice, but not my number #1, sport is my #1. So here are my concerns. The V8 is notorious for carbon build up and engine issues over time. My local dealer just repaired 4 V8s last month alone. My SA and master tech recommended the 35i or diesel (I want to return to gas due to our driving styles). It appears the V8s suck in terms of resale and this would not be a lease. On either spec'd vehicle, I doubt I would see a resale value on the Dynamic Handling Pack, so this also makes me question whether it is worth the $4600. Although I am not too concerned with mpgs, I obviously know the V8 is going to be significantly worse than our current diesel. The perks of the V8....the power and exhaust sound! The perks of the 35i....quicker and lighter than my X5d, similar mpgs, basically fully equipped (so maybe better resale?), $2500 cheaper, and perhaps better reliability. So guys/gals, which door should I take: #1 or #2???

That's a tough one. I love the equipment under door #2.
As far as the engine, the only thing I haven't loved about the 35i in the E70 is the transmission. It's just too conservative for me and a little slow off the start. To remedy that, I drive it in sport mode 90% of the time. Rumor has it BMW retuned the tranny for the F15 and it is more assertive. On my test drive I couldn't confirm it and the car was too new. Otherwise the 35i is plenty, and you get that extra nice stuff. I'll go with door #2, only reservation is resale may not be great with all that extra equipment (compared to the typical low 60s models). |

You bring up a good point about door #2 and having too many options as also possibly negatively affecting resale. Others have commented on this as well, but the F15 has a higher price of admission compared to the E70.

Did not try the MSport yet. Very limited options to drive, my dealer sold their initial allocation already and only has a demo model.

I test drove the 50i yesterday, and although it had gobs of power, I came to the conclusion (I think), that I don't need (or honestly maybe want) the new F15. My priorities for this next vehicle are: fast/sporty, handling, and some utility. What I really want (but cannot get) is a powerful wagon/avant/touring, like the Audi RS4/6 Avants or at the very minimum a 335i sport wagon.
So the next best thing, would be Audi's SQ5 or Porsche's new Macan which debuted yesterday, which I love! I test drove the SQ5 and was very impressed; however, I was disappointed by the look of the suspension (wheel gap), as we don't get the same euro-spec set up and really the SQ5 didn't look all that sharper compared to the standard Q5. So I'm seriously considering the Macan Turbo, or at the very least, Macan S. Yes, they are expensive and poorly equipped, but I as I mentioned before, I think these vehicles best suit our current needs. Here are some pics of the 50i from yesterday:

If the Dynamic Handling Package is as good or better than Adaptive Drive on the E70, I would get the DHP. I have had 3 X5 E70(4.8, 50i) and all had AD or AD equivalent(4.8 was a bit different). I did have a 2011 without AD for over a month when the 2011 was in the shop and it drove much different. The DHP/AD make the car drive that much sportier. Then again, if you are not a driver and don't need the "added handling" you can skip it.
