Can someone please explain to me which part of a 400hp twin turbo v8 is impressing?

The 'novel' aspect is the location of the twin turbochargers, also as has already been mentioned it has specifically been designed as a turbo charged engine.

But... remember, this engine is part of BMW's efficient-dynamics programme to replace large capacity engines with smaller turbo-charged engines, so the engineers were aiming at producing a lighter, more efficient and future-proof design that would meet all the emissions targets whilst providing better driveability and performance than a larger capacity V8.

As such it's not intended to be 'impressive' from a performance standpoint, compared to something after-market or even the typical low-end Mitsubishi Evo type product. They may produce excellent performance, but at what cost?

I am interested in the press release comment on lower weight. The engine looks like it will be lower weight than a comparable NA V8 (use of composites, shorter manifolds, etc) but there will be added components such as the separate circuit aftercooler radiator, with pump and expansion tank; it will be interesting to see what the net weight impact will be.

Vin: the heavy duty diesels that I work with all have turbos on top of the engine (for service access), and not in the valley. None of them have exhaust ports on the inside of the V, as neither weight nor throttle response tend to drive those design decisions (at least at the power levels we work with). I am not sure if that applies to light duty diesels such as pickup trucks.
Right, ie. International Powerstroke and Isuzu Duramax are designed very much like this V8. Even the placement of the aftercoolers is similar. I wonder if what's starting the exhuast is a cat, because it would really hurt response to have something that constricting right off the bat. It'd hurt the scavenging effect from the cylinders and increase lag simultaneously.

I believe that the hp level was noted as such to save the consumer on insurance costs. Most likely there will be some adjustments made to the powerplant which will increase the hp level.

Yes, those are twin catalytic converts mounted several inches after the turbos. Those are part of my concern over under-hood heat.

I wonder how the side-to-side cylinder balance is handled, whether there is a crosspipe right at the turbos, or much later in the system, and if so, how effective it will be.

What Steved said. It is not the hp, but rather the engineering approach. This engine appears to lay a foundation for the next generation of BMW engines. Drive the 3.0 twin turbo in any current BMW model, then take those results, and extrapolate them to an even newer generation of engines, and I think you will be impressed.

The kidney grill in newer BMWs is getting wider as well as the vents under the front bumper to take care of heat. The hood vents are also slightly bigger.

Its N64B44U0, so there is room for more power.

T = highest power output
O = high power output
M = medium power output
U = low power output
K = lowest power output
