Wanted --- Spikes-Spider 20" Snow Chains

For tire size 315/35/20...

I doubt there's anyone out there who would be selling a pair but if there is, let me know if you have either of these you want to get rid of...

I'm tired of having to switch between 20" to 18" (snow setup) wheels just to play in the snow the 3-5 times in the year.

In case anyone is curious, the Spikes-Spider chains worked great on the 20" (Style 87 rims/Diamaris tires) setup that I have! I used them 2 weekends in a row during the recent snow storms at Mammoth Lakes, CA. Coincidentally, Mammoth has received the most snow in the lower 48 States so far this season.

Anyway, I wasn't prepared to pay $500 for a set of Spikes-Spiders. With a little patience and a lot of luck, I just happened to find someone on craigslist who was selling their set for practically nothing. For reference in case someone down the line is curious in getting a set and want to know what they look like on 20" tires, here's a couple photos.

TOTAL time to install the set on the rear tires: 1-minute (:30 on each side). Awesome!!!

I put SCC Z chains on mine this past winter. They didn't scratch the 20s and they worked just fine.

Brit6 - Yeah, they don't look great. But I'll take the easy install and function over looks when it comes to safety in the snow.

jaybo12 - I was debating using the same Z-chains on the 20's. And I'm sure it would've worked just like it did for you. But since too many people (including BMW folks) recommended not using traditional cable or chains on 20" tires because of the limited clearance on the X5 (higher risk of snagging on break lines, etc), I went for the spikes-spiders. And for $100 for the spikes, I really couldn't complain. Plus it added some peace of mind.

I just pulled the trigger on these babies. Now I am going to proceed to buy my season pass for Alpine Meadows/Homewood in Tahoe.

Sweet! Now since you bought them used from a Saturn Vue owner like I did, be sure to call Spikes-Spider and order the 'fix clips' so the center mounting hubs fit tightly over the lug nut size of the X5. Lug nut size on the Vue is smaller. And check with the ebay seller to make sure that he/she is sending you all the parts as listed on Order form for Spikes-Spider Parts: Spikes-Spider . You'll also need to adjust the chain links so they fit over the 20" style 87 set up you have since the Vue tires that these came from were probably smaller.

That's it. You're all set to have some fun in the snow. It's going to be one great season! I'm not certain any Tahoe resorts are open yet, but Mammoth Mountain's ski season officially opened (early!) today!

I used my Spikes-Spiders for the first time last week and they scratched the shit out of my rear rim face lips. The plastic edges touche the rim and I think dirt gets under there - basically sanded the paint off. Have you used them in a limited fashion? I had to drive 24 miles down 80E under chain control.

I have the same setup - except my rims are AFS Style 87 Silver rims and I have Toyo STII tires.

Possibilities:

- Your OEM Style 87's have a different dish depth / offset.
- You have longer fix clips to keep the plastic edges of the spiders off your rim face.
- Your Michelins have lip protectors that are keeping the plastic edges of the spiders off your rim face.
- Your chains are adjusted tighter or looser and don't "float" like mine are.

I'll post some pics of what it looks like soon.

Damage pics:

Almost 100% certain this wouldn't of happened with any tires that have lip protection as it would keep the plastic edge pieces off the rim. I will probably try to rig up some rubber strap things on it to help space it out (like the lip would do) until I can burn out these shitty Toyo's.
