I don't know any places around Herndon but if u're willing to drive 30mn, check out Batteries Plus
844 Rockville Pike
Rockville, MD 20852
301-738-0606
I've had good experiences with them with my previous cars, not with the X.
You might wanna have ur Alternator check also b4 you spent the cash on a new battery, most places will do that 4 you free of charge.

Not sure you'd want to drive to Winchester, but Batterymart had the X5 battery in stock for me last summer. Don't remember the price exactly, but it was definitely cheaper than the dealer who was the only other place who had the battery in stock. They have a website--www.batterymart.com

DCX5, Are you out of warranty? My '02 (07/02 built) got a new battery installed this week from the stealer at no charge. Give them a call with your VIN# if you are not sure when you warranty ends. If you are out of warranty you can save over $100 but staying away from the dealer. There are some articles here and on some other bimmer boards about how to obtain a replacement battery (Douglas brand, etc). It is a very easy DIY job.

thanks for the quick responses! i jumped it again this morning and took it to a merchant's (it was close by), they said the bat/alt is fine. they think it might be a short somewhere and probably should take it to the dealer. yeah it's out of warrany, 58K miles .

there was a recall a long time ago on a programming problem that would drain the battery way back when. i'm not sure if it affected 2002 x5s, but definately a whole bunch of 2001s...

you might want to check out if your vehicle has an outstanding recall on it.

the earliest dealer available appointment was in 2 weeks! so i took it to this shop in arlington (j and f motors). the dude "analyzed" the problem for 2-3 hours and just replaced the battery. charged me $370!!!

is the small orange light/led (marking what gear you're in) supposed to be on all the time near the gear shifter? mine stays on even when the car is off and in parking.
