trying to fix my car!
Sadly...i backed the X5 into another car this past weekend and basically scraped the hell out of the rear panel right right down to the metal. on the plus side there were no dents and i was able to pop everything back into place i just have about 4 or 5 scratches now. I decided that i would first try to fix these scratches myself and see how that works and if all else fails i would just get it fixed at some body shop. Can someone tell me if the following is a good idea or will work?...
Basically i would buy touch up paint or a paint stick from bmw and try to cover up the scratches. After it dries i would assume that the surface would be uneven because of the paint sticks so would wet-sanding make it even again? and then i would compound, polish, and wax the panel until it looks brand new! hopefully y'all get what im trying to do! |
can u post pictures of the damage so we can get a better idea?

You need a primer if it is down to the bare metal. If you go without primer, the paint will probably chip off later.
Otherwise, you do have the right idea. Wetsand the spot and go with a finer grit each time. Then go over your wetsanding with a polish and then wax it. |

i removed most of the black markings but you can see the scratches at the very bottom and right below the tail light. another question..should i first wet sand to get out all the damaged paint and then apply primer/paint and then wet sand again? |

Is that on the plastic part? That may make it tougher.

no surprisingly i popped the panel back into the place there are a few scratches on the plastic but its not very noticeable, the scratches im trying to fix are on the actual panel
|
but still, isnt that panel plastic and not sheet metal? i dont know if that makes a difference or not
but definitely give a try before u go to a shop. let us know how it works out |
I would say to clean that part as well as you can before painting. I guess it would help to sand down the area to get all the chipped pieces of paint completely off.
