detailing the engine bay of my 3.0 2008

I really want to detail the engine bay of my X5 but am hesitant to spray water directly into the bay. Is there anything in particular I should be careful of with an X5.

PS I have purchased all of the required brushes, degreaser and dressing from detailers domain.
