Question about Snap in cradle for Nokia 6230i
I currently use a Nokia 6310i in my 08/2005 X5 in a cradle which works well. However the phone it is very old, the buttons are starting to fail and I fancy a new one. I can get a 6230i which I understand is fully compatible with the X5. However the 6230i does not seem to have an external aerial connection. This is one of the really good things with my current set up, the reception is very good. My question is, does the snap in cradle for the 6230i have some means of connecting with the external aerial? If anyone has experience of this set up, could they let me know. Thanks in advance, Oscar. |

I've got a 6230i for my cars - it's one of these awfully good "day job" phones that Nokia make from time to time. It's the natural successor for the 2110 - 6310i - 6230 lineage.
Having dismantled the cradle for the 6230/6230i I can confirm that this uses an RF coupler: a piece of metal foil stuck right under the top half of the 6230/i in order to soak up the 900/1800MHz and pipe it to the car's aerial. If you connect the phone to the car outside the cradle in an area of poor coverage, you'll see the signal is boosted when you clip the phone into the cradle. So it works - to some degree. The connection will not be as good as the physical connection of your 6310i - but the 6230i probably has a better radio in it so the net difference will probably be slight. Also, the 6230i is a GSM900/1800 and in the UK there's plenty of coverage and capacity (unlike 3G WCDMA) - so my guess is you will hardly notice any deterioration from your 6310i. If you like the 6230i I'd say go for it - and use the cradle. They work well together. The closest non-cradle Nokia that also is good is the 6280 (which has full functionality with the car kit). However, I lived with the 6280 for a while and within a few weeks reverted back to 6230i... Good luck! |

Thanks for the replies. I'll go ahead and get the phone and cradle.
